Diagnostic help - water comes out of the EGR valve

Re: Diagnostic help - water comes out of the EGR valve (82Powerhouse)
That's weird, where is it coming out of the EGR? Is it clear water or is it coolant. Is it a lot of it or just a little.

Re: Diagnostic help - water comes out of the EGR valve (82Powerhouse)
Welcome to the forum!!
That has to be the strangest problem I have heard in a while.
If it's coolant, then I would say cracked head, block, or blown head gasket. But in those cases you would either have white exhuast or oil that looks like a chocolate milkshake.
If it's clear water, and only at start up, it could be the normal water that is part of exhaust from every car. Normally once the exhaust system is warm enough it comes out as steam (seen from every car in cold climates) and most time it's boiled away so it's not visibile at all.
I have never heard of water from an EGR though.

Re: Diagnostic help - water comes out of the EGR valve (BSeery)
It is definitely coolant. I pressed on both the upper and lower radiator hoses as a test, and both times water squited out - nice! There did not seem to be any resistance either.
This is a restoration project and there is a very heavy black smoke out the trail pipe.

Ide definatly have those heads checked for cracks. If water is up there in the egr passage like that then its also down in the cylinders. Matter a fact the cylinders that connect to the egr passage would have to be full of coolant. Could also be blown head gasket. A very blown head gasket.

Bad head gasket is number one, after that, bad intake manifold....leaking between rear water jacket xover and the EGR passages in next channel...is possible, but I have never seen one....
at minimum the induction comes off, pull the plugs, and do a compression test...or just put air into each cylinder with valves closed, and see what happens....mostlyyou can hear it....

There is no coolant near the EGR in the intake. After thinking this one through I can only suggest a head gasket failure in the area of the two middle cylinders on the passenger or the driver's side. This would allow coolant to be forced through the EGR/intake crossover passage when you squeeze the rad hoses. But as noted above, only a severe failure would allow what you have described.

Yes, there is coolant near the eGR on the 82. Maybe someone has messed w/ the EGR and chopped out too much or due to heat the manifold cracked into the water jacket. The EGR pad is almost DIRECTLY above the front to rear coolant passage. The EGR feed passage runs from center
port on pass side head alongside the manifold side to the rear into the EGR pad, the outside hole in the lower pic of the EGR pad. It can easily be seen by the oil splash shield.

Good call Twinnie, I was just about to head over to the crossfire forum and find a pic of the intake to look at it....
I think this is Paul79's first ever mistake....I'm noting it in my calender...

Re: Diagnostic help - water comes out of the EGR valve
Thanks for all of the advice! This gives me a good place to start. Maybe it won't be too difficult to fix.
