Removing the clutch linkage on a 69 (Header replacement)
OK, I guess I had to figure it out myself!
I wouldn't be so pisssed, if my back didn't ache so bad.
I got my headers off, by removing the clutch linkage (thanks to some advice from fellow forum members)
BUT!!!
Nobody told me to re-attach the linkage BEFORE bolting the new headers in. The linkage has to be removed to get the old headers out and the new ones in, but the headers CANNOT be bolted, because there isn't enough clearance to drop the linkage down on the bracket (frame side).
IS there another way to do it?
Seriously, my back (always a problem) gets really sore bending over doing things like washing dishes and installing headers..... My wife wonders why I continue working on my car when it hurts so much... but I won't do the dishes... DUH!!
Please help me... I think I have no choice but to at least loosen the headers. (It wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for the alternator bracket... :smash:  :smash: :banghead:

Re: Removing the clutch linkage on a 69 (MIKES69)
It's been a while but on the frame side I think the rotation point is held by a bracker that is bolted to the frame (at least mine was). Remove the bracket, position the z-bar (that is what we are talking about right?) and then position the bracket and reattach it ot the frame.
I did mine from the bottom of the car, and I have headers that never had to be removed.
Hope this helps...

First of all, get the car up on jackstands and work on it from a creeper. It's FAR easier to get to all of that stuff from underneath. You should be able to completely remove the Z bar. You also should be able to re-install it with the headers in place. I don't know which headers you have, but I have done this with Hookers, Dynomax, and some cheapy brand X headers. There is really no place that the header should interfere with the cross piece.

Re: Removing the clutch linkage on a 69 (A C)
Thanks guys....
Is the frame side bracket removeable???
I can't feel a bolt... I was assuming that it was welded on.. If it is removeable.. No Problem.
Going to the Lima Fairgrounds tomorrow for the swap meet.. Looking forward to it!!

What I did was remove EVERYTHING from the z-bar. Remove all of the springs, the rod from the pedal, and disconnect the rod that goes to the clutch fork. Then you take the nut off that holds the z-bar to the frame bracket. After that, you should be able to just pull the z-bar off of the ball stud on the block. The frame bracket is welded on, but once you figure it out, it really isn't that hard to get the whole z-bar out of the car.

Re: Removing the clutch linkage on a 69 (A C)
Just did this today, with Hooker Super Comp headers. Removed the spring and pedal rod. There is one nut which holds the Z-bar to the frame. Removed it, and the indexing washer (has a tab to prevent rotation). Then lifted the Z-bar up, and out of the frame, and off the ball mounted to the block. Left the connection to the throw out bearing intact. Removed header, did work, re-installed header, hooked up z-bar after the header was torqued.
I should mention I did most of this from underneath the car.
