Pros and cons of the long vs short L88 hood to replace my stock bb hood 68
I know that I want the extra room under the hood, but what will I gain going with the long hood ....Any of you guys have done this? My car is being stripped of its paint so fitting the lond hood wont be a problem...I like the long hood and getting rid of the wiper door... :flag

I had a short L88 hood a few years ago and replaced it with the long to get rid of the wiper door. It doesn't line up correctly at the rear edge of the hood where it comes together with the windshield and fender, but it doesn't look that bad. I like the fact that the opening is closer to the windshield as well. I think it looks better than the space that's there when the wiper door is present.
I say that if your wiper door isn't working correctly, go long!

mine was on it when i bought it, but i would have changed to this anyway..i prefer the look up to the windshield to eliminate the space between the end of the hood and the windshield that is there with the regular short hood...it is a good spot to put guages like i did...

I just put the big block hood on my car this winter. I like it short so I could keep my wiper door. I say keep the door. But it is your car and no one can please you but you.

I have the short version. I actually think the wiper door is kind of cool. It's one of the unique early C3 items. I haven't seen any other cars with one. Not to mention that the actual L-88's had the short hood.

I used to have the long version on a car, the dark green one in my sig. below. The long version brings the tall deck of the hood so close to the windshield that it makes it almost impossible to get a good view out the windshield. It really bothered me quite a bit. I have never driven with a real L-88 style hood, but I wouldn't trade a reg. big block hood for a LONG L-88 style one at all unless you only trailer and show the car, you'll regret it!!!!!
Good luck whatever you do,

I have all 3 hoods, LT-1, L-48 and an L-88 hood I bought this past fall. The are all the short original look as I like the wiper door personally, as said previously it was a unique feature of that era.

I too am part of the small miniority, I rather the short hood. It gives the car character and sets it apart.

I'm in process of installing the long L88 hi rise hood on my 72 right now. Wiper assembly stuff is all off and most of the unneeded vacuum lines are out. I'll have a body shop match the fender lines at the windshield to the new hood and door lines.
As soon as the wiring for the Spal fans is nice and tidy, the next stop is at the body shop/painter.
I've been wanting to do this for 5 years. Looking forward to getting it done.

I would really stop, and consider this: I have a 68, and did the swap:
1. 1968 hood latches are a ONE YEAR only wonder. The hood rivets and recess for the female portion of the 68 female hood latches and the recessess in the the hood itself WILL not fit 69-later hoods. In other words, the hood form itself where the female 68 hood latches go have a unique depression in the hood where they bolt into. Also, the bolt hole configuration is different
2. DO not try 69 later female hood lathes. They will not fit, and wont line up with the male hood latches
If you still want to swap after this, ENSURE your 68 female hood latches will fit on your hood, and that they will line up with the male portions
Again 68 latches are a one year make, and will not retrofit to 69-later

The wiper door is
It is one of the many things that sets the earler cars apart of the rest.

No offense but even considering eliminating the wiper door shows the lack of appreciation for the unique qualities and mystique of the early C-3s.
Go ahead & do the long hood because the more C-3 owners that rig original C-3s, the more valuable my original C-3 becomes!
Sure I have a non-original hood but the original is easily put back in about 10 minutes.
