Default My Spark Plug Wires Are Getting Stiff. Too Much Heat?

I've noted that my rear-most spark plug wires that attach to 6/8 and 5/7 spark plugs are showing signs of hardening. Is this a sign of heat damage to the silicon? They are routed under the headers using the stock routings (with only the 'v' shielding on 1/3 and 2/4 sparkplugs).

Is this a problem? Am thinking that spark plug wires and new wire looms are in order... :yesnod:

I use the the 'basic' 8mm silicon wires (aftermarket equivalent to the gray packard electric wires). What's a good replacement 8-8.8mm wire for under $50?

I just got a set of Taylor 8mm wires. Box came yesterday! :) After shipping (free) and handling $7.95 I think it was just over $50. MJ

Which Taylor wires did you buy? I see the following at Summit: Hi-Energy, SST, Spiro-Pro, '409' Proj Race, Pro Wire

Like toothpaste... (Too many choices).

MJ,

Are those the spark plug wires that are routed under the header or are they intended to be routed along the valve cover?

I have a bigblock - routing is direct, over valve covers. (easy) :) MJ

According to my Summit Racing catalog:

"The universal Spiro-Pro wire comes in black, red, blue, yellow, purple and white (custom wires come in red and blue only).

I'm leaning toward getting an OEM set of Packard replacement 8mm wires with a good set of under-header wire separators.

I have a related question. I put a set of Hedman full length headers on an '81 and I could not replace the stock heat shields. I do not like the way things look, because it appears the plug wires could shift themselves into harm's way. Does somebody know the best practice for running the wires with headers? I think it might be better to run them over the top and down as on the older big blocks..or am I paranoid? I saw that the idler arm was very close to the headers, and I read that this causes premature failure. This might be better addressed in a new thread.
