Re: Shipping a C3 cross country? (stolemyname)
I once inquired about a shipping quote from Miami to the Los Angeles area for a potential buyer of my 80' Duntov...
The cheapest quote that I got war approx. $800... but the car has to be driveable and the transporter was a open trailer..

Depends on how far you are going and who has a truck that you know. I moved about 10 hours away and towed mine behind my truck. When I bought the car, the previous owner had an inclosed trailer that he brought the car down in. If I move again, more than 6-7 hours I will call a car hauling company and get them to do it. It costs a little more than doing it yourself but its worth it to me. If you know someone with a truck and trailer that doesn't mind a road trip they can do it.
How far are you talking? I am guessing you mean at least a 1000 miles or so.

INTERCITY LINES,INC-1-800-221-3936, $1,119.00 (enclosed) COAST TO COAST-CA TO MD.
I used them and IMO they are the best, hands down, period.

Wer're talking OR to FL - from your previous posts, right ?
That's quite a trip.
Our new Vice President in charge of worldwide sales turns out to be a real
'car guy'. Not only is that cool, but he has my last name (McClure).
More-over, he has his own car shipping company, which fell out of his car collecting hobby.
I can ask him how much he would charge - as another data point.

Yup, it's from NW Oregon to SE Florida. About 3,500 miles or so. When I moved here I drove my '95 Trans Am, sold my Beretta, shipped my Cherokee, and left the Vette with my dad. Guess I covered all options on what to do with a vehicle on a cross country move!
The company that shipped my Cherokee wants close to $2k and will only ship it enclosed (which is what I'd want). That's quite a bit more than I spent shipping the jeep, and expensive enough for me to continue to put it off. $1,200 sounds pretty good, but if I could find a place I'd trust that could do it for less then that would be even better.
McClure? From such movies as "How to ship a car cross country in 10 days, and Red Red Red on the highway?" Ok, bad Simpsons mis-quote.....

I just shipped my 70 from Chicago to San Diego. It cost 650 for an open trailer. The car needs paint so I was not worried about the finish. If I had a cherry paint job, I would have shipped it enclosed.

I had my '78 shipped from Phoenix to Chicago for $625.00...no problems; no complaints.

Call these guys: Weber Transports, 580-772-5224.
They absolutely rock. Shipped my car from St. Louis, MO to Austin, TX for $750. Closed transport, only two cars at a time, door to door in one day.
I'd avoid the big internet transport companies like the plague. I spent a lot of time on the phone with some of them. Most of them don't have their own trucks--they contract out to truckers with big 20 car rigs who wander around picking up cars until they're full, and then start delivering. Which means you can wait up to FOUR weeks for your car (they don't tell you that, but it will be in the contract they make you sign). Those double decker rigs also mean your car could be driven on and off a whole bunch of times while they unload and shift cars, and that it's not only out in the elements, but that if it spends some time on the bottom deck, it could end up covered with oil and crap from the cars above.

The absolute best are Horseless Carriage Carriers.
Pricey, but A1 service and tracking.
I once shipped the Batmobile, yes that's right, the Batmobile from Kansas City to NY JFK Airport with them, and they were excellent. I actually booked the car on a flight to Australia for the premier of the movie back in 1990.
Met them at the airport, they were there right on time, the car was perfect, and the handling and care they showed was beyond imagination.
