FWIW: The stock aluminum intake on my '81 was painted silver. It was kinda flaky in places. My replacement crate motor has an Edelbrock Performer, which I left in its natural cast condition. Can't say there's a whole lot of difference.

I think factory originals were masked off before paiting, so there was potential overspray but they were traditionally without paint. If that matters to you, then don't paint.

I personally like the effect of a fully painted engine and intake.

I painted mine with PPG Viper red with clear coat. It withstands gas oil and is shiny!

I tried VHT, but it yellowed and fell off. :U

I found that the edelbrock eluminum was pretty porus, it absorbed oil pretty easily. The facotry GM stuff seemed to be a much more oil resistent casting. The aluminum colored engine paint is pretty good for making future engine detailing a little easier.

Have you thought of powder coating instead of painting??
That's our plan for our edelbrock torker 2. It is not the polished one so is high maintenence to keep it looking nice. We are going to use a clear powder coat so it will still be the silver color. I think it looks good silver with the red engine. Just my thought.

I have powdercoated some intakes (my old crossfire intake was powdercoated) and it holds up very good and is very easy to clean. In fact, it's the best solution IMO but I couldn't find the right color for my intake and my oven was too small to put it in.

Marck,
I was recommended Powder Coating, apart from looking good it makes it much easier to keep clean. Clear huh! I hadnt thought of that I was going to get it done in silver. Clear would be better though. :hurray:
