B & M Trick Shift fluid in TH350 - worth it or not?
I'm getting ready to install a new torque converter next weekend and thought about using B & M's Trick Shift fluid. It it worth the extra cost? Does it have any advantages over standard fluid or is it just marketing hype? If you've use it in your tranny did you notice any difference in its performance?

I installed a shift kit about a month ago and used the B&M stuff. The gasket was leaking so the pan was pulled and gasket changed. Then, I used some $2 a bottle fluid...and haven't been able to tell much difference. Hype if you ask me.

I don't think it is hype - it is a good synthetic fluid that has properties that
may provide marginal differences. I looked over the properties of the fluid,
as described in my B+M Transpak. They compare it to Dexron and Type F.
The variables that matter are rubber swell, viscosity vs temp, and shift times.
I determined that the differences weren't worth the price.
I filled my newly rebuilt (by me) TH400 with Type-F fluid for quicker shifts
on top of the street/strip shift option. Also, The Type-F fluid gives more swell
to the rubber (like up to +20%) versus Dexron (I think was negative 5%).
So, anyone with leaky tranny seals may want to try some Type-F fluid rather
than changing them out - until a suitable time comes to change them.
just my $0.02 :seeya

I agree with Budman et. al. just stick in some good quality Type F, ATF. It has about the same amount of friction aditives as B&M's expensive stuff.

I used to run Type F in my hopped up 350 and some of my 700's. I could tell the difference. Dextron would make my hard shifting tranny more of a slush box. The down side to any of the high friction oils is decreased parts life

For what it's worth; I have a 3700+ lb '79 Z28, with an 8"/4500 RPM converter in front of a THM400. I have drag raced the car hard, just ABUSING the tranny in the water-box. the Tranny is 13+ years old, with 1500+ runs, and a thousand miles of street driving, running just 'Type F' fluid. I'm of the opinion that weekly drag racing is a true test of drive-train components, but I know of no-one who runs 'Trick-Shift' fluid. This is NOT to say it is not a good fluid; I just don't know anyone who runs it.....
