New Guy with a question.
What is the cable that runs from the firewall on the drivers side down under the car and attaches to a bracket on the transmission pan? Mine is frayed where it attaches to the bracket and i need to replace it.

That would be your steering wheel lock. Only two cables attach to a bracket on the trans and that would be the shifter cable (from the rear through the trans tunnel) and the shift interlock cable (from the firewall down the side of the bellhousing. The speedo cable hugs the trans tunnel and is held in by clips.

I dont think its either one. Because it is currently disconnected and the speedo still works, and the automatic detent shifter cable runs from the carb down the other side of the firewall. Is it something to do with the odometer, because that doesnt work?

I would think it was the steering wheel lock. This is not a necessity by nice to have. GM still stocks parts so if interested call you local GM dealer. Good luck.

The transmission kick-down cable/vacuum line runs from the carb down to the right rear of trans. Not the shifter cable. IThe shifter cable attaches to the pan via a bracket (same as on both my TH350 and 700R4 trans).
Known Trans cables:
TVS/Kickdown - carb to right rear of trans
Shifter - floor to left pan rail/bracket
speedo - firewall to cruise transducer to left rear of transmission
There is also a wire/wires that mount to the driver's firewall and attach to the left rear side of the transmission. On my TH350 it controls the converter clutch lockup. I used an alternate mounting point inside the car (via shifter hole) to trigger/trip the 700R4 lockup.
That should be the extent of all connections between the trans and car besides the obvious driveline connections and cross-member.
NOW, with that said, if Bubba owned your car in years past, all bets/promises are OFF!!!

Re: New Guy with a question. (TedH)
Thanks everyone! I think it is the steering wheel interlock cable. Anyone know if ZIP or Ecklers carries this part?
