Question about numbers matching
I am looking at a 1970 Corvette. The engine is out of the car and the owner says it is numbers matching and the original motor for the car.
How do I check that the numbers match, and if it is the original motor that came in the car. Where are all of the numbers that I should check?
Thanks for your help. I'll keep you all posted on the progress.

Re: Question about numbers matching (iveka)
If your looking at the motor from the front. Right above the water pump on the left hand side, look right above the top water pump bolt. There is a pad on the block that sticks out in front of the head. That pad will have a code and a number on it. The number part will match the last 5 or 6 digits (can't remember which) of the vin number of the car. I'm sure someone can chime in with a picture to better clarify.

70PurpleLS7 is correct about the block stamp, but if you're going to pay any kind of premium for a "numbers matching" car, keep in mind that the block number is not the only one that counts. Intake, carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, etc. must have the matching numbers too. I believe that the block is the only component (besides trans & rear) that has a VIN derivative on it, so the other components are easier to match from swap meet parts, but there are "correct" numbers for all of the other components.
Others can chime in with more detailed info, but I hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I should be able to take a look at the car this evening or in the next few days. Is the VIN number for the car below the windshield like it is on newer cars?

And, don't forget the tranny. I've got a 1971 Muncie 4-speed in my 75...it should have large numbers stamped vertically on the side of the case where the gear case and the tail cover meet. Mine says:
P0S10AD
which indicates a M20 Muncie 4-speed with wide ratio gears manufactured November (S) 10, 1970, then in smaller numbers (vertical as well, but upside down from the muncie identifier stamp) is:
70S410255, which I believe marks it as being installed in a 1970 corvette at the St Luis plant with the last 6 of the VIN# being 410255...which is odd because the corvette it came from was built May 1970, and muncies built in November of 1970 should have been installed in a 1971 corvette.

Re: Question about numbers matching (iveka)
Here are matching numbers in my 1979. The key is 10002. And that numbers appears on the transmission also.
But as others have noted you can much deeper into this subject: into "correct" numbers. For example this HEI distributor is 1103291, correct for a 1979 L-82. Just depends how far you wish to go....
