Default Timing plate I don't see any numbers what about the notches

I installed my Mallory Uni-lite, Mallory coil and Mallory Sidewinder 8MM wires. She started right up and man she seems to sound a lot better too. According to my old tach, she's turning at 500 rpm's. One problem, I can't read the timing marks. I have a picture showing the plate. I have the mark sitting right in the valley of the largest indention. Where does this put the timing, how many degrees?

The deepest valley is 0 degrees. I believe each peak upward(in the picture) is 4 degrees. so the third peak up from the deep valley would be 12. Not totally sure but I think someone can verify or correct me if im wrong.

Ok, if zero is the deepest valley facing the car from the front, should I set it up 2 peaks counter clock-wise to get 8 degrees. My sticker on the car says that I should set it at eight degrees at 900 rpms.

Yup just checked the marker on my 73. It should be the same as yur 74. Confirm...the deepest valley is 0. Each peak above is 4. Bump it up to 12. Yur idle will raise when you do this. If it goes too high then back the idle screw down some and recheck timing again. Get it to 12 @ 800rpm in park. that should be good for timing purposes. When done with timing. Then set idle to your liking.

yes ...rotate the dist counter clockwise to advance. 8 may be factory setting but 12 would be snappier most likely. so long as you dont have spark knock, 12 initial is better for performance.

Thanks, I set it at 12 degrees at 900 rpm's. Then backed the idle down to 500 rpms after tightening the distributor down. I took it for a little spin it feels better know. Man, I love the way it starts know. This is a lot better than the stock points.
