L36 427 engine question
Was the 427/390 that came standard in the 69 L36 a short block or a long block? Also, anyone have the actual stamping numbers on the block for that year?

The term "short block" and "long block" are in reference to replacement assemblies, which were not comptete engines, as would be installed in a production car. The stamping would have the serial number of the car followed by a letter code that identified the engine/trans combination as well as other possible combinations including such items as ignition, A/C, or emission controls. In the case of a `69 L36, the cars serial number would be followed by LM if it had a manual trans or by LL if an auto trans. There will be other numbers the pad but those are the one that identify the original combination and if the engine is the original one.

Or do you mean "Big Block" ? the 427s were bigblocks, the 327s were smallblocks. I also used to be confused by the terms short block and long block. Actually I am still not sure of the precise definitions, somewhere between a bare block and a complete engine. A "shortblock" would be closer to the bare block, while a "longblock" is closer to the complete engine. MJ

Typically, a short block includes all of the components that go inside the block itself but none of the external components like the oil pan. Some do not include the cam, lifters, or timing gear, but most do. What's included with a long block can also vary but is typically a complete shortblock plus heads and pan. Typically, a long block does not include an intake manifold or any other external components. Both short and long block assemblies are intended to be used with existing external components. There are also "complete" engines that do include most external components. Some complete engines include carbs, distributors, etc but some don't. When comparing prices from different sources, you have to pay attention to what's included and what isn't with all the assemblies.
