OD Tranny, anyone here of a 5L60E???
I am sorry, I meant 5L40E. Thats right, a 5 SPEED auto tranny. Yea baby!!!!! :yesnod: :chevy
I know ford has had one for a couple years now, but I noticed one on a GM vehicle new for 2003.

That would be sweet. I guess they will have to make one to fit the V-8 though.

Hate to be such a naysayer, but frankly, considering the gear ratios, and reducing the o/drive to .75 instead of the older .70 of a 700/200 setup...and that much steeper first gear....making it nearly useless for a vette anyway...
so what's the point???
they'd spend more time making the damn things shift right and last longer from the factory instead of letting the aftermarket do all their reliability engineering for them....they'd actually HAVE something.....
I think i'ts a step backwards....frankly I had a '60 vette some 35 years ago, with an old iron powerglide in it....and that old 2 speed automatic has a good bit of get up and go to it....would have been nice to have a 355 gearset and an overdrive added to it, been perfect then....but it was adequate as it was, and even that silly old auto saw duty in some dragster applications, so it was rugged enough....
sorry, other than lockup converters, all these auto tranny things just don't show me a damn thing for 40 years of 'development',....makes me wonder what in hell the design teams are doing over that length of time....and yes I"m serious....

I don't understand your reasoning mrvette. If a 6 speed manual is to die for in the new cars, why wouldn't a 5 speed auto work better as well. I think the new transmission would be great with 3.55 or 3.73 gears.

Where is this written? Six speeds have 2 overdrive gears - I dont think they are to die for - they have simply become the standard

A multi speed tranny is ONLY good if you have a very peaky power curve...asy all the power/torque really, between say 4000-6000 rpm's....
and you need keep that engine in that region.....
but a V8 of most any reasonable configuration will have a broad nice torque curve...same nearly at 3000 rpm's as at even the hotrod version at 6 grand...
so where do all these silly gears come in???
as a stock L48 engine, with 336 rear, and muncie wide ratio 4 speed....I typically started out in 2nd gear...and switched to 4th....unless I was really getting on it...I never hit 3rd gear...just never...on a hill I would hit 1st on takeoff,...about the only time....now with a torque converter that has an ADDITIOAL 2-2.5x torque muliplication factor...who needs steeper first gears???
only if the final drive is a more reasonable 2.0 to one....as in non existant...
is a 3.0x first gear ratio defendable in an automatic tranny....
making my first gear useless with my 336 and 700r4.....ill matched if ever a combo was....
not I"m not a dragracer...but an everyday street car...but even then dragracers are limited by traction action....
O seeing yet another silly gear for some sales type to hype....sorry, but in fact a 400 turbo with a 2.0 rear ratio is about all that's needed on the street...with street tires...they light up immediately....assuming 350+ ft lbs at the crank...of course...not some wimpy 4 cyl with 100 ft lbs....
another thing, the 400 turbo is near indestructible...IF built right...too boot it's CHEAP, and frankly if I could find a 2.0 rear gear ratio, I would go that route in a second....
