Started Stereo install. What the heck did I find???
I started ripping out the old stereo (if you could call it that.) And of course "while I was in there" I decided to clean up some of the wiring. Well I found a few wires that lead to nowhere. I am trying to figgure out where things go.
So first question. What the heck is this. See where I am pointing. Any idea what that is.
It has wires that come from under the dash (Yellow, Orange, and Black) and then there is another plug that has White, Grey and Green. The end of the White, Grey, and Green went to the back of the car, and were not pluged into anything.
Under the dash the Yellow leads to another plug that was not pluged in (I pulled out another aftermarket stereo already).
And the Orange was spliced to provide the old deck with constant power.
I am just trying to figgure out if the last person had any possible idea of what they were doing. Either way I really want to know how to actually hook the new deck and amp up RIGHT!!!
p.s. here is what I am replacing all the old stuff with

Mine is a '79 and it has that same little metal thing you are pointing at. I think it is a relay of some sort- guessing for the alarm? Someone here will know.

Re: Started Stereo install. What the heck did I find??? (PyjamaSam)
I don,t know what that is you are pointing at but i can tell you some of the colour codes.Yellow is switchable power for your radio (power when the key is in accessory or when the car is running )Grey is hooked up to your light circuit (only power when your head lights are on)Black is ground Orange is constant power (usually connected to your cigarette lighter circuit)The wires that go to the back of your car maybe the original speaker wires . You should use a volt meter to test for power before you hook up anything Good Luck Dave :grouphug:

Do you have an electric antenna??
The relay that you're pointing to could be for an electric antenna..... i'ts been a while since i've pulled my centre console out, but i've a feeling that the orange and yellow wire might have something to do with antenna operation too.

79VetteMike> Hmm that is what I was thinking, but I am not sure.
74BBcherryred> Thanks for the great info on the wire colours. That will be a big help. I don't think the wires going to the back are the speaker wires. I have found those. There were a bunch of unconnected wires.... Apparently sombody was on a wire disconnect trip. :mad
Hopefully sombody can figgure out what this little device does

Your welcome .As already stated YES i to think that is an after market power antenna relay at sometime i would bet someone put one in and when it broke the just cut the wires and put in a standard antenna .The more i think about it the rear speaker wires in GM,s are Dark blue /light blue for one side and dark brown /light brown for the other side of the rear The front speaker wires are dark green /light green and dark grey /light gray good luck Dave

Thanks all. The power antena relay sound like it is it. I do have a power antena, but I guess it is an aftermarket one that sombody put on. So it looks like that little relay is going to go in the box of "parts I don't need but should keep"
Thanks for all the help. Once again, the forum to the rescue.

The silver thing you are pointing at is the power window relay.. Sorry if this is a dupe. :_dupe:

The diagrams are from the GM factory manual for the 1979 Corvette. The wiring is identical to the 1978.
Here is a source for the 1978 version.

Re: Started Stereo install. What the heck did I find??? (paul79)
hey sam...Have you installed your new stereo yet??
...... i'm wiring in a new DIN 'multi-plug' to my car so i can just 'plug in' a new stereo ... i've got to the point where i need to connect the front speaker wires, and i'm wondering which is positive, & which is negative??
The colours are dark green & light green (right) and light brown & grey'ish (left).... i'm not sure if GM even bothered to specify pos & neg ... or if, indeed, it makes any damn difference!!??
Have you come across this?
(... and before you ask, i know what is pos & neg on the rear speakers because i put them in myself)

Re: Started Stereo install. What the heck did I find??? (Skeets)
Paul79> Thanks. I will be ordering me a copy of those.
Skeets> I have not yet actually got to putting the stereo in (it is taking longer to get everything out and make sure I am hooking it up right). But I am not sure about the front speakers, I removed aftermarket ones that the previous owner put in, and I will be re wiring them, so I will be able to make sure I hook up + and - right. Not sure if rewiring is an option for you. The stock wires are not even there for me, so it is out of the question.

Chris,
Here is a on-line 1978 electrical wiring manual that another forum member posted a while back.
