Default Massaging Old Dead Paint

Here is one for you. The paint on my vette is old and dead. I can get a little shine out of it if stand out there and buff the fool out of it with polishing compound. I was just wondering couldn`t the same thing be done with some wet sandpaper and wouldn`t it be easier?
Tell me you thoughts on this.
