Why is this in my 69?

Re: Why is this in my 69? (RCB69L36)
Several possibilities. Either your car was manufactured before the change over to the pie plate actuator (which I think occured around Aug/Sep 69) or someone replaced your pie plate unit with the tin can style. My October 69 "had" the tin can style but I have replaced it with the tin pan version which was appropriate for my car.

My August, 69 built 69 has the coffee can style. The change-over to the pie pan style was later in 69. There is a difference between 68 and 69 coffee cans. Don't remember exactly but as I recall, 68's used 1/4 x20 threads on the adjuster, while 69's used 5/16 x 18. Many catalogs sell an "adapter" to connect the different threads. Chuck

Robert,
Early 1969 Corvettes did indeed use the "coffee can" style wiper door actuator as several people have stated. This is one of those instances where "early" included most of 1969 production. The actual change to the "double pie pan" style occurred in mid-October 1969... So just about the entire 1969 model run used the early style. I believe that the finish on these actuators was zinc plating with a dichromate wash... Whatever plating process was used, the result left the actuator a translucent gold color; it looks as though someone may have painted yours at some point.
Like my friend Chuck, I seem to remember some differences in the first design actuator itself, but I'm afraid that I'd have to consult the reference library to determine what was actually revised. If Chuck says it was the threads on the connecting nut, I'd take his word for it... He's probably right!
Regards,

Chuck is right, the cutoff for the "coffee-can" actuator is sometime after August 1969. 1969 was a weird year, a strike haulted production and setup of the assembly lines for the 70 model, so production of 1969 models continued all the way until December 1969. The first 1970 model didn't roll off the assembly line until January 1970, instead of August as is usual for car models.
Therefore some of the parts that were supposed to go on the 70 model were put on the very last 1969 models, that's how the "Pie-Pan" acutator ended up on post August 1969, 1969 models.

What's your VIN #? Is it an early 69? My 68 was the 4th to last one built. All the engine numbers match perfect except the intake which is a 69 part. I figure they ran out and slapped the 69 on to finish up. Probably a lot of stuff like that went on at the end/start of the runs.

No, they weren't making 69's and 70's concurrently. 69 was the year of the long GM strike. For all GM models, not just Corvette, they made 69 model year cars up through and including December of 69. They didn't start making 70 model year cars till January of 1970. That's why there are relatively so many 69's and so few 70's....it was a short model year run.
One of my friends has a December 69 built Corvette roadster.....VIN is 38000 range. Has many "1970" style items, i.e., rear end coded with 3 letters, not 2, 1970 alternator number with late 69 date, etc. Also, his has the double "pie plate" acutator. Hope this helps. Chuck

Re: Why is this in my 69? (Clink69)
Most likely, your cannister was replaced somewhere along the line. The "pie plate" was the universal replacement sold for all over the counter. It's just been fairly recently....past 5 or so years, that a reproduction coffee can cannister has been made.
I agree with Rowdy Rat....October 69 was the "change date". Therefore most 69's should have been equipped with the coffee can....except for the last 2-2 1/2 months of production. Chuck
