Default Synthetic Oil and Cams, Comp Cams Tech Advice

Earlier in the week, someone posted that Crower did not recommend synthetic oil for their cams. I asked CompCams what their feelings were on synthetic oil.

The response was:

The only time I dont recommend synthetic is when running a roller cam because often the oil is so fine the lifter wheel will slide across the lobe instead of spinning resulting in a failure.

Seems to make sense.

Hope this helps.

Wow, that's funny because crower made it sound like it was worse to use on flat cams, and rollers were OK. I think the general concensus is that synthetic is good for motors. Some engine builders of severe performance engines don't like it, and I think that is crowers angle. I am curious what monty, and merlin are using? Rollers are what all of the new cars have that come filled with synthetic. Thanks for posting that.

C5 uses a roller cam and comes from Chevy with Mobil 1 in the crankcase.

When stock spring pressures are around 300 lbs. open I don't have a problem with a synthetic or on a drag engine that is monitored closely, with spring pressures over 500 lbs. I like a premium petroleum based oil as it seems to drain off less and there is more on oil for startup as far as street engines go. Synthetic oil needs to be changed as often as regular oil don't forget that an oil change is cheap insurance.

Strange...I'm running Comp Cams 288AR Solid Roller, and I've wailed on the motor, twisting past 7k many times......no problems....and the pressure is around 70 lbs, hot. What am I missing here?
