Check these out if you have a steel pan, http://www.wondermagnet.com/dev/magnet42.html
I will probably use these with my new engine ;) .

Smoked,
I was told to be careful which sort of magnet to use cause it could break down with the oil and heat...and cause problems. Did you verify that this is the correct magnet for an auto. oil pan ?? Do u think it would fit thru the Drain Plug hole so i dont have to drop the pan ?? How many are you going to put on the bottom of your drain pan ??
Thanks, RR

Radio Shack sells rare earth magnets, which are extremely powerful, about 3/16" in dia that you can bond to your original drain plug with J B Block weld so it won't move.
They come in a pack of 2, I believe, and can also be bonded to the bottom of the pan. Work great for removing metalic dust and chips

I bought a drain plug with a magnetic tip years ago from one of the vendors (can't remember which one, maybe Mid-America).
There's one on my wife's 2000 Grand Am that has about 1/4" magnetic tip on it. It used to be a rental car so I don't know if that was an add-on by them or if it came from the factory like that.
I know places sell oil filter "belts" with magnets to try to help trap metal right in the filter.
Let us know what you find and what you decide to go with.

The drain plug in the 90 350 I bought had a magnetic tip on it. A big favorite of some guys is this one: http://www.wondermagnet.com/dev/magnet1.html , epoxy a couple in the bottom of the pan. Good luck.

I have a fairly large magnet placed on the outside of the oil filter.
It's on the rear, and doesn't show.
When I change oil/filter I just transfer it to the new filter.
I'm not sure if it does much good, however better than nothing.
A drain plug magnet would be better.
