I answered Chevy, but I fell like there is some kind of trickiness going on here :D The 57 and 59, has me messed up a little. It's probably F**D.

Leave it up to the collector car writer to put this long-debated issue to rest:

During the period 1957-1972:
Ford produced 27,579,638 cars (#1 in '57,'61,'66,'70 and '71)
Chevy produced 30,327,749 cars (#1 in '58,'59,'60,'62,'63,'64,'65,'67,'68,'69 and '72 -- although production figures '62-'69 have always been calculated based on estimates, so the actual figures might actually be lower.)

And FYI, Pontiac and Plymouth are next in line, but far behind.

The source is Encyclopedia of American Cars 1930-1995

Most popular based on numbers sold, or most desireable among collectors? There is quite a bit Mopar muscle in that date range.

Yes, & evidently Chevy did when the V-8 came out according to
The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1972
.
1955 Chevy "a sales record of 1,830,029 units which still stands." p.11 1972

The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1970 p.5
"And, believe it or not, 20 years of Ford dominance in the American youth market melted away almost overnight. The kids started buying V-8 Chevys en masse as early as the spring of 1955."

According to
The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1972 p.8
"... and in 1931, Chevrolet took over leadership to lose it again only in 1935, 1957 and 1959."
