Well I am going to guess Chevy because ford was save from bankruptcy in 1938 for its contribution to militarization and Dodge, well dodge was dodge.

By most popular I assume you mean highest sales....so Chevy had outsold Ford for a number of years until 1957 when Ford outsold Chevy. Can you believe that, the Classic '57 Chevy, being outsold by Ford :)

Chevy may have been popular with the general public, but in the post war era, and early to mid 50's, Ford was king with the shade tree mechanics. Then the 55 Cheve and the small block took over, and never, ever looked back

Not surprised you know.

Sales is really not an area of interest to me & found out both in 72 by accident from The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1972
Yes, was surprised.
I had owned 4 57s by then. None stock. Was running a full race 427 bored w/ 2 4s on a tunnel ram that was never beat on the strip or street.

Well said !!
That's very similiar to
The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1970 p.5
"And, believe it or not, 20 years of Ford dominance in the American youth market melted away almost overnight. The kids started buying V-8 Chevys en masse as early as the spring of 1955."

"And the rest is history. Within weeks the new V-8 Chevys were moping up their stock classes on the drag strips- and running away from the Fords and Olds 88's at the stoplights."

1955 "a sales record of 1,830,029 units which still stands." p.11 The Complete CHEVROLET Book by Petersen Publishing Co. 1972

George

As my interest is performance, I knew the flathead was popular w/ rodders before the SBC from reading.
The oldest cars I have any exp. w/ is 57 Chevys & they were old at the time. I really wanted something older. Had a neighbor w/ about a 32 Coupe w/ a 350 SBC that he did not drive & would not sell. It was stock body, .etc. w/ newer stock wheels. He said something like it was an evil handling outfit.
Guess so! I could have made a very good Hot Rod from that!

Everytime I read about you and the '57 427, I think of Two Lane Blacktop and that '55 Chev....

Yep, that staight axle was not the docile thing on the streets, but coil overs and front discs will fix any ill handling staight axle ford. I had a 57 210 2 door, had the F.I. 250 h.p. 283...hydraulic cam and Rochester Injection...then I got a 301 short block from a racer, Johns 12:1 pistons, put thr 12-18 Duntov cam....scoured the bone yards for gears....i got 5 pumkins that were considered scrap, outside the boneyard....owner was happy I took the junk...was able to make one complete pumpkin w/3:70 gears...most of the units I got had busted spiders, but the ring and pinion were fine. I went from a 3:55 to a 3:70 at a grand cost of 0....not bad for a 19 year old. That 57 with the 301 and Duntov, F.I, 3:70's wailed on the streets of Erie Pa, in the early to mid 60's. Had trouble with a black 58 Pontiac Star Chief, 2 door, 370 cube, factory 4 speed, and trips...I always had the guy in 2nd, but there the cubes and the 4 speed took over. I always wondered what a 4 speed would do in that car...though the 3 speed wasn't that bad.

Maybe you remember I have mentioned I was out hunting for races long distance & both the Bel Air 2 dr. ht. & the BB coupe were black. Also never ran a ft. bumper which weighed about 65 lbs.

What about you, did you run a ft. bumper & what color?
Yep, those rear ends would not hold up. Started swapping stock w/ 4.56 posi., broke both, put together the 4.56 w/ twisted gears & ran it full time in the SB. Installed Olds rears to fix.

BTW, even a spell checker would have trouble w/ Jahns pistons.

My 57 was mostly stock looking, had the bumpers and the hood bullets, only deviation was I took the v from the hood and trunk, molded the holes. Original color was two tone, white top and a coral/pearl botom....painted the bottom 60 Chevy Royal Blue Metallic, pinstriped the hood and trunk, truck mufflers, chrome plated the grease caps and lug nuts, then later ran the Plymouth spun aluminum caps.
