Default Update: C5 brake upgrade (with pic)

Just got the film back and only two pictures turned out. I really need to get a new camera.

Anyway, here is one of the new front rotors on the hub for a trial fit. I had to have the hub machined to reduce the overall diameter by 1/4" and had to have the center part machined to accept the rotor. Apparently there is a lip that the stock rotor actually sits on that is sligltly larger than the surrounding area. You can see what I mean in the pic of the hub. Just look for the shiny machined parts.

Just got the new bearings installed on the front and the hubs will go on tomorrow. After that, I can start taking measurements for the front caliper brackets. I still need to repaint the Z06 calipers, but haven't decided what color to go with. Probably a blue to match the car.

The rear rotors vice the hubs were machined for the extra clearance. I just didn't feel like taking off the hubs and messing with the rear bearings for this project. If I ever do rebuild the trailing arms, the hubs will be machined like the fronts to more easily allow rotor replacement.

I honestly couldn't tell you who makes the rotors. I haven't seen any that have the same drill and slot pattern before. On the inside they are stamped with VARGA and have a part # similar to the stock C5 rotors. They are also stamped with a little GM on them.

What diameter are the rotors? How thick are they? And finally, what are you going to do for an emergency brake?

Very cool. Make sure to get some good pics of the brackets and calipers installed without the rotors.

Any chance you could tell us what is needed or post the link to the original post? C3 bits are hard to come by over here but C4 & C5 rotors are made by DBA here in Aus.

Dear Jeff and others,
I cannot verify that ChrisO' is correct, but I do know that Disc Brakes Australia makes C5 rotors. Whether they are OEM for Corvettes or just aftermarket is another story. One thing that I can confirm is that the calipers are made by PBR in Melbourne Australia and have been OEM for ALL Corvettes since the C4 was released in March 1983. The new C5 calipers are the same as fitted to the high performance Holdens manufactured here and the same that will be fitted to the Pontiac GTO when it is released in the U.S. later this year, of course without the "Corvette" wording cast in to the housing.
As to the DBA rotors, this small Sydney based company is manufacturing rotors for an incredible range of cars, so if you have an old Ferrari or Jaguar etc. you might find a rotor to fit it in the DBA range. Look them up on the web for more info.

Regards from Down Under

OEM C5 rotors are made in Brazil.
