Default Question about O/D transmissions

Hello all, I am new to this forum and I love it. I was just curious about somrthing. I have been reading about all these 2004R tranny conversions and I always thought them to be junk and not handle any torque. Are they all that much better than the 700R4? I know the 700 has a weak first gear but always thought they were the O/D of choice. Just a question out of curiosity and any input would be appreciated. Thanx. biggjimm

Welcoms aboard biggjumm....I did my 700 conversion back in fall of '97, and have been relatively 'ok' with it in concept...I just do not think the 700 tranny is the one to use, anymore....apparently from what I hear on this forum as well as elsewhere, the 200-r4 if the way to go....but have no first hand knowledge....no driveshaft cutting, same tranny length...no 3/4 clutch pak failures....but the input shaft fails over 500 ftlbs input torque....poor baby...should handle any small block ok....too boot, it's lighter weight, and smaller....

Depending on nature of failure, and when in the money cycle of things...I just may change over to a 200 myself....

no matter which tranny you choose it has to be built to handle the power that's going to be trown at it. So a 200r4 or 700r4 will work equally as well. Most people choose the 200r4 just because of the ease of installation. It's more plug and play than a 700r4 is.

If I were you I would skip the 200 & the 700 and go for the newer versions 4L60E & 4L80E. These newer trannies offer full lock-up converters(Big advantage in my opinion) and are fully programable with a number of manufactures plug in boxes. As far as durability I have seen a 4L80E behind a twin turbo 5.9L Cummins 1200+ Ft. Pounds of torque :jester

I used the 200-4r in mine,383 with 3.73 gears. The low end is really strong and the od for the highway is fantastic. You get the best of both. The 200 is a straight forward swap, sure you have to get a few parts to do it but there is no crossmember or driveshaft mods needed.A stronger input shaft is available. The only other mods to the trans was a 10 vane pump rotor, GN servo piston and shift kit.One of the very best things I have done to the car.

What's nice is that that Turbo Buick crowd has built a market for the 200-4R so aftermarket companies are building them up to handle a lot of power. They have them live with Grand Nationals launching with full boost and running sub-10s.

Given the amount of torque and HP you're producing, I'd suggest an Art Carr 200-4R. He builds 'em to handle that kind of power.

You could also check if Bowtie builds a sufficiently beefy unit.

I've never heard a first-hand tale of someone tearing up a properly-built 200-4R.

The 200R4 has better gear spacing, etc!

TH7004R or TH2004R http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zero...288021#5288021
