Default Which intake, carb and heads for my 1979 L82

I'd like advise on combinations of intake manifolds, heads and carbs that have been actually installed on Vette's that fit properly (ie clear) the hood. I'm thinking about installing CompCam's Xtreme Engergy cam with a 262 grind which many folk have indicated has good vacuum and operates with an RPM range of 1300-5600 rpm. I'm think RPM Performer intake, Dart 200 heads, Holley carb but am concerned that this combo will not fit. I'd also like the name and part number of a good set of headers that work with the heads. This was also posted under C3 engine mods. :banghead:

The Performer RPM and Holley carb may introduce hood clearance issues unless you go with an aftermarket low-profile air cleaner. I'd recommend the Edelbrock Performer and Holley/Q-Jet, the Dart heads (I wouldn't go much more than the DART 200's) and headers/duals with the cam of your choice. Powerful combination! :yesnod:

Depending on your transmission (auto?), you may want to consider a torque converter to utilize the new engine power/rpm range. If manual trans, you have greater cam choice flexibility. Also consider gearing options to suit you engine/trans combination.

I think cam is too small for the heads and intake :yesnod:. If you want that cam, get a Performer intake instead of the RPM. For the heads, the 200cc runners may be too big for what you want, if you'll be operating in the 1300-5600 rpm range with 262XE, then a little smaller runner would help to keep the velocity up and therefore you wouldn't lose any torque. The 200cc would hurt the bottom end. Something like the AFR 190's would be perfect. I also believe the 262XE is the largest cam that can be used for auto trans cars without changing the torque converter. Good luck

P.S. I use the Performer RPM on my '77 with a 1-1/4" drop base air cleaner with 3" filter.

My engine has a stock bottom end which isn't as good as the L82. I put World Products SR Torquer heads with 67 cc combustion chambers on it to bring up the compression a bit. They have 2.02 x 1.60 stainless valves. I installed a Crame HMV272 cam which is now called the Powermax along with Summit full roller rockers. It's a dual pattern cam with 216 degrees intake and 228 exhaust @ .050 lift with .454 and .480 inch lift intake/exhaust. I just recently installed a Professional Products polished intake manifold (Edelbrock 2101 knockoff) and an Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS 650 cfm carb. This combo is very streetable and gives me 15 inches of vacuum at idle. It will idle down to 700 rpm with a slight lope. It has a good bottom end and pulls strong from 2000 rpm up. I don't have any horsepower figures but if anyone wants to run it on Desktop Dyno I'd appreciate it. I'm also running Dynomax Ceramacoat headers into a true dual 2 1/2 inch set of pipes and out through Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers. My air cleaner is a drop base Wysco with a 2 1/2 inch filter and this clears my stock hood with about an inch to spare even with the 1/2 inch spacer I needed to clear the choke housing. This combo also wasn't a budget breaker as most parts are readily available from places like Summit and Jegs. If you're looking for performance I don't think I would go much lower than a 268 cam. For more info you can search for my username over the past 2 or 3 weeks and you'll see the posts on the intake/carb install. Good luck.

I've run both the Performer and RPM intakes on mine, and got them to fit with a Chevy 14"chrome dropbase filter. With the RPM intake I run a 3" element, with the Performer I could run a 4" element.
I also agree the cam you selected would be useless with the 200cc ports. If you're going for torque, stay small with the cam/intake.If you want horses,go big ports and as much intake duration as you can stand.
I ran a Comp 268H in my 350 with the stock heads and Performer intake for years. Not a bad combo for a near stock engine.

I run the XE262 along with the old style EDL performer(#2101) which is stock height. Im running a Holley 600 vac sec carb(#1850) which many think is too small for my application. Its very tollerant to pedal slamming to the floor at anytime with never any bog and provides enough CFM to get my 350 well beyond the cams high end of 5600rpm. The little carb serves me well with a stack of mid 13 second time slips to prove it. I did up the jets a couple of sizes and installed a lighter vac sec spring to get the secondaries to come in earlier. Also a well tuned Q-jet is a very good carb. Are the dart heads angle plugs? I would recomend Dynomax ceramic coated headers but im not sure if they fit heads with angle plugs.
