255's will not rub
255's WILL rub if you have any frame straitness or worn A arm bushing or other steering component issues.

Only one way to find out, try it!!! :)

I have 255/45/17 and they rub when I turn full lock. Other than that, I have no other issues with them. Good luck.

I got a little rub on the front driver's side at the front, lower part of the wheel well. Shaved very little off the inside part with a file and no problems now. The back passenger side tire would touch on right turns into the driveway. For that I took the cotter pins out of the rear spring bolts and raise them 1 and 1/2 turns and it stopped.

i had a similar conversation yesterday with page. I have 235/60s on my '69, and they rub when I turn hard. he said he's got 255s on his 79 and they don't rub at all.

we were wondering if the fenders got wider when chevy switched to the rubber bumpers. I always thought that even the '73s looked wider up front, and lately i thought the later cars were wider in the rear. does anybody know if this is the case, or if it just appears that way?

When RPO QBS (P255/60R15 tires) became available in 1978, the factory trimmed the front fenders of units so equipped. Here is the trimming on my 1979.

I think Paul79 is absolutely correct. I remember when the 255/60R15 were offered in conjunction with the 15" x 8" N90 aluminum wheel package in the '70s (my dad sold Chevys part-time, and I detailed cars at the same dealership) that Chevy DID perform 'some' kind of fender-lip/wheel-well/etc. modification to clear the 'bigger' combo, but I can't remember exactly 'WHAT' it was! I'm told by a few guys who've added the package to their C3s that rubbing DOES occur without these changes. By the way, my OEM Eagle GTs cleared, while the replacement BFG T/A Radials DON'T clear.

Believe it or not, not all the same tire sizes are the same size. It depends on the model tire. Even 2 different model tires in the same size will have slightly different measurements as far as overall diameter or tread width. Difference between a Kelly Charger & a Goodyear Eagle Gt II (255/60R15) in tread width is almost an inch.

I knew, going in, that different makes of tires have different dimensions, even in the same sizes. The GTs seemed 'shorter & wider' than the BFGs (I never measured, just an eye-ball thing). I can say this; The BFGs 'ride', and 'wear' better, but the GTs 'hooked' and 'handled' better (less side-wall 'squirm'?). With 200m or less HP, it doesn't REALLY matter in my case!
