Default New ignition for my '71. Suggestions

Me again...the guy that married into the 71!

I haven't yet dug into this project because the car is still buried under funiture in my in-laws garage but I am assuming that my '71 has a points type distributor. Is that right??? I am wanting to change this to whatever might be a good suggestion from you guys. It is a bone stock 350 270HP car. Should I go with? A regular HEI? MSD? Mallory?

Suggestions please?

Ben

Yes, it should be a point type system. You could change over to a GM hei easily. But I'd stay with what you got unless it gives you problems.

I have a 70 with regular points type ignition. No problems and no intention of changing until it gives me problems. If it craps out I will go with Per tronix Ignitor- have heard some good things about it and it looks like an easy swap.

My philosophy if it ain't broke don't fix it, unless there is nothing left to fix.

Haven't reached that stage yet.

Stick with the stock distributor because you need the tach drive. If you go to an HEI you will have to either change the tach over to an electronic unit and build a filter for it or you will have to get a custom HEI with a tach drive or go for an aftermarket distributor with a tach drive. All big buck items. Go with the stock unit and if you really don't want to mess with points change over to a Pertronix ignitor. They work well and are reliable and you'll never have to set points again. Go to the product reviews and look there for articles on the Pertronix.

What are the specs for setting the points and such?

Thanks

If you go with the Pertronix Ignitor there are no specs. Just install it and connect two wires, one to the hot and one to the negative on the coil. The unit will keep your dwell at around 30 degrees with no adjustment required. If you go with points you should set them up with a dwell meter. i believe the correct range is 28 to 32 degrees.
