Default '79 heater outlet

Am i missing something??

On the main heater outlet, which blows warm air into the footwells.... is there meant to be some sort of ducting that splits the output and directs it into the footwells??
On my car, the air just blows directly down onto the transmission tunnel and heats up my radio!
.... at some point, a non-standard, and probably larger radio has been fitted to my car and i wondered if a duct had been removed to make more room??

You can view the ducts in this diagram.
