Is there a trick to removing alternator pulleys?
I have a new AC Delco alternator going on this new engine and need to replace the pulley with the March pulley/cover to go with the rest of the set up. Is there a trick that I am missing that will break the GM pulley off? The bolt that it is on has a hex socket to keep the pulley from turning while using a wrench but it's ackward as hell attempting to not have the alternator not move around. I haven't put the alternator in a vice yet(I will use plastic inserts if I do), but thought I would ask before I waste my time when some of you might have some tips.

The only thing I can think of is the nut may be reversed threads. If no one else chimes in I know an alternator guy I can ask tommorrow.

When I rebuilt mine, I took it to a mechanic who removed the nut in one sec using an impact wrench (at no charge), while holding the pulley with gloves. I'm not quite sure, but I don't think it has reverse threads.

There's a HEX in the head of the shaft, put an allen wrench in there, put the 90 degree end of the allen wrench in a vise and then just turn the wrench, works everytime if you don't have an impact gun

Definitely a glove and impact wrench, most parts stores would pull it for nothing, takes about 15 seconds

It's NOT left hand threads....it it's VERY difficult to do without an impact wrench. MOST parts stores have an impact behind the counter and will knock the nut off for you for n/c. It would be good to have your new pully and fan with you....they can impact it back on again....and save you a bit of trouble.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I used this same setup on my alternator. After the first run the nut had worked its way loose and the lock washer ate into my new pulley. That sucked. Find a good flat washer to go under the lock washer and tighten the poop out of it.

Thanks to everyone who answered. As you all said... "A piece of cake with an impact". I never thought about taking my Ingersal Rand and hit it a couple of quick times. Just proves old dogs can learn new things.:yesnod:
Eddie 70... I took your advice and placed a flat washer behind the lock washer.
