How to get to 400 ft/lbs torque
I have a 79 with the L48 engine and 350tranny. I want to get to around 400ft/lbs of torque. I plan on rebuilding my engine over my spring break and I was wonder what are all of your suggestions on how to do that on a budget. I was thinking of getting the Edlebroke Perfomer EPS manifold, new camshaft, and port my heads. What do you think I could get out of that? What else can I do that's reletivly cheap? Thanks for the help.

400lbs of torque is alot to ask of a L-48 engine without doing alot more. I have a 355 going in shortly with advertised torque of 391ft/lbs of torque and I have alot more radical set-up than you are talking about to get there.

I agree 400 ft'lbs from a small block requires a whole package of high performance parts the least of which, you need a set of aftermarket heads, flat top pistons and a good cam, intake carb and non restrivtive.exhaust.

Have your L-48 engine tapped to a four bolt main, go with a 400 crank (383), after market heads high rise intake, at least a 650 carb and about 10:1 compression. It is all going to cost money but "Speed cost money. How fast do you want to go?" It is better to do it the right way the first time than trying to add on down the road. :)

There are no magic nos. You can get close to 400 TQ w/ min. rec. cam for stock converter/gears which is Comp Cams 260H or XE256, al. intake, Dynomax Cerma headers & duals.

Get some vortec heads, a performer intake and a short duration cam like the Comp cam XE262 and you should be near what your after. A roller cam like the XR270 would do the trick even better but your on a budget.
Budget are made to be not respected. :D

79 Corvette,
How about 416hp and 423lbs of torque?

I found this articale a few years ago. I have used it for the base of my rebuild. I just had my short block rebuilt for $1700, that will be my base. I'm sticking pretty close to what they did, but I will retain my stock Q-jet. I might go with AFR195 heads, as the Trick Flows now are now $1055 with 1.47" springs.
Hope this artical helps some. Good luck, Steve.
