Removing differential cover to change fluid?
On 1979 and 1980 corvettes I was under the impression that the differential cover could not be easily removed. To change the fluid you have to
suck the old out thru the filler opening.
In a new catalog from Eckers they sell kits for the 1968-79 and 1980-82
which include the cover gasket, fluid, additive and for 1968-79 a vent.
What is involved in removing the cover for these years?

I thought that sucking it out was the only way unless you want to drop the rear spring and that could get pretty ugly.

I don't think you really remove the differential cover; you remove the carrier from the differential cover :skep:
The cover is sandwiched between the spring and the crossmember so you'd have to remove both of those to actually get the cover out. You might be able to lower the spring and loosen the bolts enough to drain the fluid, but I'm not sure about that.
Another alternative is to install a drain plug in the bottom of the differential. This was talked about in a recent thread. Most people have had it done with the differential out of the car, but it can be done with the diff in place.

On my 1980, the differential carrier and differential cover are a single (one piece) component. You would just remove the drain/fill plug and suction the old fluid out. The 1980 unit (Dana) is very different than the 1979 and earlier components.
