Default O/T How many of you remember the first oil shock in '73?

I was living in Vancouver B.C. at that time and ppl. couldn't give their bb vettes, or any other bb car away, and the original Capri's jumped about 15% in price almost overnight. The 2nd crisis in late 70's really seemed to put the nail in the casket until the last 8 - 10 years or so when prices seemed to soar as in real terms the price of gas decreased.

The cost to fill the minibike went through the roof! I was thirteen at the time, but I do remember my dad rumbling about it. As a kid, you only worry about what effects you, as it should be.

Now, lets talk about the gas increases in the early eighties, that one hurt. No job, no money, gas was about $1.40 a gallon for a bit.

Yes I remember that one. But to me the shock in 1980 was much more siginificant. I renewed my mortgage in December of 1980. I was offered six months at 13.75% or five years at 14.50%. My financial advisor said to take the six months. His shoes were not shined, had not had a haircut in too many weeks: lack of personal discipline. I took the five years. In June of 1981 the rates hit 22%. Many friends lost their houses. I did not. Shine your shoes people! And anyone with a military background will know what this message is saying.

I was a youth, and I remember all the hype on ecology, conservation of
energy, peace, and the coke commercials with everyone holding hands.
Ah - the good ol' carefree days .... now I know how my parents felt then. :yesnod:

I was in high school at the time (73) . I remember skipping school and having to wait for 2 hours in the gas line in the morning to get gas for the day. We had to use a different car everyday since they had the Odd Even tag thing (only odd or even could get gas on their day). Price was still only 40 cents a gallon..

I remember both of them, of course, and it was then and is now just a bunch of political BS based on bored politicians seeing us jump through another hoop.....the real price of gasoline is about 75 cents/gallon.....so i't's just a matter of who and how much you have to tax to provide governemnt services...roads/schools/jails...etc....since the price of gas here is somewhat cheap on account of this nation spans 3000 miles of roads left to right, and 2000 miles some odd up and down....we don't tax it so much, by comparison....

course we could take the oil for free....

I saw the second oil shock coming a mile away....Sha of Iran got shakey, I immediately sold my Pontiac and bought a new...get this 1600 cc RWD Plymouth Arrow....4 speed, nothing much...BUT got 33 mpg on hwy, and towed my boat from Rockville Md. to Annapolis Md...to sail on the bay and rivers.....AND the 50 gallons capacity of my van at the time....it made us wait in line only 3x the entire crisis....AND having that 50 gallon capacity onboard, meant we enjoyed our vacation that summer, bypassing all the gas lines from Rockville Md. to Woods Hole ferry...to Martha's Vinyard for a week's camping....stocked up on gas for trip back and never stopped on the way home either.....

One of my co-workers lived 48 mile from work. He paniced and bought a Honda Civic. I was in a Van pool and we stopped every other day for gas. Someone would get out and fill two gallon cans along with our fillup. Every day for a few months on our way out of the parking lot we stopped at his car (he worked a later shift) and put a gallon into his Honda. Now when he checked his milage he was getting about 100mpg. No one believed him,,,,, A great joke.   You had to be there...

I was 14, washing Chevys at the dealership my dad sold at part-time. 20 miles each way, MANY nights not seeing a moving car in EITHER direction (How the HELL do you sell cars when NOBODY'S driving?). Brand-new BB Laguna S-3s, late model SS 454s, 400 CID Caprice Classics, Z28s, 350/BB Blazers, early sharks,... NOBODY wanted them! Sold ALOT of Vegas, though...

I heard about that in '73 but never did see it. I was living in the South and the closest thing I ever saw to a gas crisis was that the price went up a little. All the stations had gas. Never ran across one that was out. I think it was more of a regional issue.

Panic took hold and people kept their tanks toped off. There was plenty of gas, just that is was running up and down the roads or in peoples garages in their full tanks. If you take every car out there and top off the tank, all the gas storage facilities would run dry. Think distribution system.

Yeah I remember too! :( I was in college and worked weekends at a Sunoco station fixing cars & pumping gas. At one point I think they limited the purchase to $5.00/car. I remember standing pumping gas for hours!

The station was "company" owned and they let us come back at night when the station closed to fill up our own cars & our families cars.

I also remember the National Guard being called up to drive tanker trucks from VA----can't remember why though. Maybe a teamsters strike at the same time?

I was a kid & knew it would not last so I was buying "gas guzzlers"!
One ex., 69 Firebird 400 conv.- nice, low miles w/ new top (someone cut it to break in) about $800! Never locked it & sold for profit later.

Yes I do remember it. I was 7 years old and I would hear over the TV, radio or see cars in line at gas stations, and from my parents and teachers that there was an energy crisis. The second crisis in 1979 I was 13 and I remember that they would only allow vehicles if the last number on the license plate was even you can get gas on a certain day... it it was odd on another day.

I remember it. Went from paying 20 cents a gallon a couple years earlier to well over $1.20 a gallon (I'm too old to remember the exact amounts) and having limits on when and how much you could get.

I remember the 73 crisis, had a hell of a time often trying to get enough fuel for the trip back to the Quonset point naval air base. I was in the Navy back then and often my brother in law and I would exchange license plates just so I could fill up on the odd/even days of gas rationing. What pita that was! :cuss

Maybe this will take care of all them damn miniature-semi trucks on the road. They are too damn big and just slurp gasoline at ridiculously fast rates. Must take about $50 to fill them every week.

huh?

Oh, yeah.

I forgot, most people car them damn things SUV's.

I hope this gas price hike will make some people go back to driving their old Honda Accords to work everyday instead of that quad cab dually they bought for the 2 times a year they need to pull their boat to the lake.
