Default Putting an LS6 into a 78 Vette

I have been seriously thinking about putting a new 2003 LS6 motor in my 78. I have seen that LS1s can be put in, how about the LS6? Any reasons not to do it, or technical problems that can't be worked out reasonably well? I look forward to to a wealth of info from my beloved Forum.

Well, all an LS6 is a LS1 with a upgraded cam and heads . If it were me I'd find a used LS1, buy a heads and cam package for $3K (MTI) and have 450hp+ and would have spent 1/2 the money.

That's just me though.

:withstupid: I wouldn't pay the cost of an LS6, when you can build up an LS1 cheaper

DARN!!! I thought you were putting a "real" LS6 (as in 1971) into a 78.

From what I have read there is more of a difference between an LS1 and an LS6, but I may be wrong. As for a big block, sorry, I have played with big blocks, and prefer a stout small block for the Vette. I would be interested in a built LS1 if it is possible to get the same, or more, power than an LS6 for less money, I just don't know what you would do. Give me more info please.

I did a little quick price check, and I found the LS6 motor for $6950 and the LS1 was $5695, but the LS1 was the 320 HP version for the Camaro/Firebird. Is ther a MUCH cheaper price for the LS1 out there, the one for the Vette?

you can find them on ebay for half that, and they'll usually include the ecm/wiring harness, heck some include the tranny as well

Well, my stance on it would be thus...

If you were going to just "drop a motor in", I would go with the LS6. However, if you plan on hotrodding with it, you're spending extra money for parts on the LS6 that are going to be taken off anyhow.

The LS6 has improved heads, cam, stronger internals (think connecting rods + pushrods), and the external parts of the engine in the Z06, such as intake ducting and exhaust system both flow better. I've ridden/driven a 2k2 Z06 and it's a VERY nice engine. Power everywhere. Not as spastic as a big block, but nice.
