Default mystery cooling part

(1977 L-48) I pulled a part out of my engine and I'm not sure what it is or what it does, and I couldn't find any documentation on it. It had coolant lines on either side, one to the heater, the other to the intake manifold. It also had a thin plastic tube running from it to the rear wall of the engine compartment. Just wondering what it is.

Why would you want to do that? To help the engine warm up faster?

no ,it helps keep the hot water from circulating through the heater core.helps with less heat in the drivers compartment.
