Newbie here. Need info on my '71!
Hey guys! I am new to your forum and I have some questions. Hopefully I won't drive you guys crazy with all the questions I am going to ask. Anyway.....when I got married about 5 years ago, my wife came with a '71 Stringray 350 270HP, 4 speed all original car. Her dad got a ridiculous deal on it from a guy getting a divorce. The car has not ran in about 7 years. Yes I know it is a crime. When they got it, it was show car quality, and ran great. It still looks great but won't hardly run. I am going to go through the engine this spring.
My question is this: I want to find the factory specifications on the heads, cam grind etc. I am sure they are 1.94, 1.50 head with 64cc combustion chambers but I want to know for sure. I have looked all over the internet and can't find what I want. I want to know the cam grind so I can make an educated decision when I change the cam.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Ben

Welcome to the forum!
I can't answer your question offhand, but I'm sure someone will, this is a great place for information. I just want to know if your wife has any sisters! :D

Here's one source for information. http://www.idavette.net
You should also check out the bookstores, automotive section. You can find lots of information in print form in reference books. The internet is a great source, too. Welcome to the Forum :seeya

I haven't got the numbers yet. I was hoping to find out those before hand so I could do some planning.
No digital pics yet. I will take some when I dig it out of the in-laws garage!

Ben:
Welcome! You came to the right place. In fact, I'm surprised that in the couple of hours your post has been up, someone hasn't given you all the detailed specs you could hope for. Believe me, there are guys (and gals) here who have access to more information than I ever dreamed of. You'll find it a great resource. As a side note, I hope your wife didn't have a pre-nuptual agreement on the car.

The 71 heads are 75 to 76 CC with 1.94/1.5 valves.. Rated a 8.5 to 1 compression with factory dished pistons. Off the top of my head, the stock cam is about .398/.410 lift with 194/204 duration at .050. Very mild cam, easy to get more power by changing this out.
I went to a Crane 272 with .454/.480 lift, 216/228 duration and had good results. You'll need to make changes to other parts to help performance. Like exhaust, carb jetting, distributor curve, more compression etc.

Re: Newbie here. Need info on my '71! (corvgreg)
Since the car is original I wanted to keep it that way. I was thinking I could go to a Comp Cams 268H grind without going to headers. Of course if it were any other car besides an original vette I would put Aluminum heads, cam, headers, etc.
Do you think a 268 Comp would be OK with the stock setup. I am going to improve the stock Qjet quite a bit and put HEI on it.
Thanks for the info!

The 268H is a good cam, have one in my 383.If you are going to rebuild the engine it would be easy just to install a set of flat top pistons and get the compression up also.Good luck and welcome.Anyone ever ask if you married her for the car? ;)

And while you are there, please register the 71. I am thinking Larry (the guy who founded 71corvette.com) will know the specs on those original engines, OR will know someone who does.

:iagree: The best place for info on only 71's is the registry. There are alot of people here who can help also.

I would love to throw in a set of flat tops and headers but my wife would have a fit because she wants it to stay original.
That kind of sucks.

Married for the car? LOL You might think that but I wasn't a big corvette fan. I have always been into Chevys. I had a 68 RS/SS Camaro.
