Please help with strange noise at rear
I am at a loss to find the cause of a strange noise at low speed. It seems as if it is coming from the rear left and it sounds more like a rubbing noise than a grinding noise. It can only be heard at low speeds. There is no knock or chatter involved so I assume that there is no problem with diff or uni joints but I may be wrong.
What should I look for?
Possible causes may be bearings however I thought bearings would make a noise at all speeds.
Another fault may be uni joints however nothing looks worn or lose.
The only other thin I can think of is the park brake shoes either needing adjusting or they may have broken springs. I am currently trying to get the disk off to have a look.
Any other ideas...by the way the car is a 78
Cheers, Guy

If the fluid hasn't been changed for a while, I'd recommend doing that.
Fresh gear oil and posi-additive can resolve a lot of rear noise issues.
Good Luck, I hope it's something simple.

Yes I have done the fluid and additive recently and it sloved the clunking problem coming from the diff. The noise I have now seems to be coming from somewhere else.

sounds like a wheel bearing to me, they are very audible at low speedss and as the speed increases the frequency goes up, higher freq./ sounds are directionally (unlike the lower ones) and therefore less audible when you sit in the car w/ the engine running.
Doe sthe sounds change pitch w/ speed at low speeds?

Marck - The pitch does not seem to change at lower speeds. It's either there or not there. I thought it might be the bearings but wanted confirmation from people here before I go replacing both sides.

Check to make sure that your brake caliper retaining pins haven't fallen out.
That happened to me and thats what it sounded like.
Good luck

Does it continue when you are coasting in neutral and get worse when in drive? Does it get worse when you turn? It could be the clutches on the rear end.

Armstrong - Yes, I am currently trying to get the disk off for inspection. It feels like the disk is welded to the spindle :mad I left it overnight and will try again today
OBDOC - No the noise does not get worse when I turn. It does continue when I coast in neutral and does not get worse in drive.
Any more ideas

I had a similar noise. It turned out to be the pad retaining pin's cotter pin scrapping the inside of the wheel.

Hi Guy
Does the sound come on when you put the brakes on? If so could be pads or the bearing. The uni joint is also a possibility - this is easier to replace than the bearing!
How's life on the Gold Coast?

Does the noise stop when brakes is applied?
Before you remove the rotor, measure the run-out. Spec is less than .005, but it really should be less than .002. What is rotor thickness? If not riveted, be sure to snug rotor to spindle with lugs on backwards with some washers.

I had a similar noise. My side yokes were worn to the point the the U-joint bolts were scrapping the differential housing. I could see the rub marks. One clue is if the rear whells have excessive camber OR the stut rods have been bent by the prvious owner.
