Default How to tell?

How do you determine what engine was orginally supplied with a 1970 coupe?

I believe the VN will tell you. Verify at the following location
http://www.idavette.net/facts/70.htm

Sorry 'bout that. I know you can tell off the VIN on an '80.

No, those are engine stamp codes. I may be wrong, but the VIN by itself won't tell you anything in 1970. You have to check if the engine stamp pad has matching numbers to the VIN.

The VIN won't tell you. Those 3-letter suffix codes are found on the stamp pad just in front of the drivers side valve cover on the engine block. There should be 2 sets of stamped numbers. One set will have the last 5 digits of the VIN. The other set will have the suffix. Take a look under the hood and post the numbers off the pad. The engine is that big orange metal thing under the hood unadorned by plastic covers and such :jester

All this assumes that it's the original engine in the car. If not, all bets are off unless you've got the tank sticker.

No - Vin stamping on the body will not tell you the engine.

I think the engine block has the 3 digit code for identification on the stamp pad.

telltales: The shifter plate specs (if not changed over to exagerate)
Original sales sheet / tank sheet.
