Lower Rear Shock Mount Removal?
The rear strut rod bushings where they connect to the carrier are shot.. I wanted to remove the struts to work on the bench but I could not remove the shock mount. Any help out there? I was looking through Mid America catalog and they mention a special tool? Anyone know anything about this or how it works? $16.99 isn't a lot of money but I can't make out how it works..

The shock mount has a keyway, and a slight taper, and has to be beaten out from the threaded end. :smash: The trick is not to damage the threads. Soak...soak..then soak some more with penatrating oil first. I don't know what that tool looks like, but I imagine it threads onto the shock mount to allow you to beat on it to remove the mount. You can thread two heavy nuts onto the end of the mount leaving a few threads of the nut hanging over the end. Lock em together and begin :smash: :smash: May the Vette gods be with you. It can be a **** of a job!!!

I got their special tool before tackling mine. I still managed to damage the threads somewhat on there (took a sever beating with a 2lb sledge before it moved at all), on the side that was never removed. So be prepaired in knowing you may still need a new shock mount even if you use the proper tool. Fortunately I got the mount to thread back on there, but it wasn't fun getting it started again.

Lots of Sili-Kroil and a large hammer. I made a shock knocker by welding a piece of 12" metal on the end of a nut that fit the shock mount. They just screw it down all the way and beat away.

I had a heck of a time getting those mounts off. I used the tool and and still needed new mounts. If you do ruin them, Bairs sells refurbished mounts for half the price of new.

Maybe I got lucky, but my brother has a bearing puller with two sharp arms that I clamped around the part the shock mount goes thru, and then just turned the puller's bolt against the threaded part of the shock mount. Both shock mounts popped off with no drama at all, like popping a ball joint out of a spindle. And no damage to the mounts either. Joe

I had to heat the mouting holes on the hub assembly to get it out...when it was hot enough, I used a large hammer with the crown nut inversed on the threads. Worked great. Don't try to turn it tho as its a D shape and you'll only scrap it.
