Default The Holley 950 MPFI Should Clear My Stock 81' Style Hood

Even with the AIR Gap style high-rise intake that comes with the Holley Fuel Injection, it looks like it will clear my stock hood provided I can get an air cleaner less than 3-1/8" high.

The height of my stock intake/carb/air cleaner setup is 10-3/4". Base of manifold to air cleaner flange is 7-1/8".

The MPFI with throttle body is 7-5/8" from base of manifold to air cleaner flange. This is only 1/2" higher than the stock setup. The shorter throttle body offsets the high rise manifold. This leaves me enough room to mount a 3-1/8" high air, and maybe a little more if the diameter of the air cleaner is smaller than the stock air cleaner.

It looks like the Edelbrock Pro-Flo will fit at 3" high, but I wonder about it's filtering abilities with the foam element. I use to run one on my 79 Z28 years ago, and it seem to allow sand to get in easier than a paper element. I never tried oiling it though. I kinda like the idea of the Pro-Flo because it doesn't cover up the FI system. Anyone have experience with the Pro Flo?

What other air cleaners are available that would be less then 3-1/8" from flange to top?

Here are some pics of the intake. hard to believe that it only ends up being 1/2" taller with the throttle body verses the old intake carb setup.

i have thought about the holley and the edlbrock. i think that they would be a good change over .they look good and both will make power .so far my cross-fire still runs good .would like to know how yours turns out.

Thanks guys! If I can get it to fit under the stock hood that would be real cool. I'd like to keep it stock looking in appearance for now. Maybe later when I can afford to get a paint job I'll change to a fresh air style high rise hood.

It won't fit unless you use a drop base air cleaner. There is a catch - the drop base air cleaner interferes with the progressive throttle linkage. I have the C950 on both my C3's -works well.

One install tip - drop the fuel tank, remove the "filter sock" that is in the tank.
Have the tank STEAM CLEANED. You'll thank me in the future! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Mark that looks a lot like the setup I'll be using :yesnod: . I'm currently undecided which side I'll have the progressive linkage. If I go with the linkage on the left, the vacuum hoses will be located in the front, & vs versa. I'm stiull curious how I'll get an air cleaner to fit with the linkage also as it will definitely be interferring with the base of my drop-base air cleaner  . I'd like to see how you solve these if you get there before me ;) .

I have an L88 drop base aircleaner on my Holley 950 EFI. I used the lower hole on the throttle arm and then cut the top of the arm off. It cleared fine after cutting.

You can see the setup here. This is before I cut the arm.

I'm not planning to use a drop base air cleaner on my setup. I'd like to go with a small oval type air cleaner, so that you can see the throttle body, etc. when the hoods is up. An alternative to the oval would be an air cleaner like the Edelbrook Pro-Flo. It looks like I can get either with an approx. 3" height from base to top. I've compared my old setup (intake, carb, air cleaner) height against the new setup, and I'm convinced I have room to fit a 3-1/8" high air cleaner above the throttle body flange.

The only problem area may be where the stock hood slopes downward toward the front of the car. The stock intakes carb base is sloped toward the front as well, so that everything would be tilted the same and fit under the hood. The MPFI intake does not slope, so this may cause the oval air cleaner to interfere with the front of the hood where it slopes down.

I have not measured the height at the front of the stock air cleaner setup to compare with the MPFI unit. All of my measurements have been at the center of the carb/throttle body. If this ends up being a problem then I could go with a Pro-Flo style air cleaner that does not extend forward like oval type cleaner. If all else fails I could have the MPFI intake milled to include a slope similar to the stock setup, but in that case I'd probably just go ahead and put a fresh-air hood on it now. I'd just have to drive around with a primered hood until I could afford the paint job. :D

Thanks for tips on the gas tank. I am planning to do some autocrossing with this car, and I'm afraid that there may be some problems cornering with the stock tank when running less than a 1/4 tank of gas. I'm inclined to get an aftermarket FI tank, but I don't have much info yet on what would fit or what is available.

Markus,

Have you installed it yet on your car? Are you using, or can it be set up to use an in-tank fuel pump? What's the price?

Markus where did you get the throttle bracket from and do you know the part number ?

Mark, I found this site: http://www.legendmfg.com/buildatank.php that makes aluminum fuel tanks for boats. I haven't contacted them yet, but they may be a possibility for a new tank ;) .

Mark,

I've had it in the car for 3 months now. It works great. I haven't been able to make it suck air even with the gauge on empty.

I'm sure the guy could build it for an in tank pump but he would need drawings.

Only catch is that this guy is located in Europe. I was thinking of setting up a small business and import these tanks. I posted here a few months back, but although some people expressed interest no one seemed ready to actually order so it didn't come to anything.

The bracket is pieced together from the stock bracket and some flat steel. I have details on the website.
