Advice for pwr steering rebuild install
Hi group,
going to install a rebuilt ram, control valve, & new hoses on the 74. Seems pretty straighfortward. Any pitfalls you know of or advice ?
Thanks,
Scott

The new valve will need to be balanced once you've finished install.
Fill the pump with fluid after install, then without starting the motor, turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. This forces fluid into the hoses and ram, and helps bleed the air out. Refill pump as necessary. (caution) Keep your hands off the steering wheel...and start motor. Wheel just might turn suddenly!! Turn wheels lock to lock a few times again to bleed the remaining air out. Refill pump as necessary. Shut off motor. Now...there are a few ways to do this. I put the front end up on jack stands so the front wheels were just off the ground. Remove the cap on the end of the valve to expose the adjusting nut. Start motor. SLOWLY turn the adjust nut in one direction untill the ram moves. STOP. Turn the nut in the opposite direction (counting how many turns) untill the ram moves the other way. Turn the nut back...half the number of original turns and your done!! Sounds complicated...or it's just that I'm just a lousy teacher. This procedure is outlined in the GM Shop Manual if I've confused you. Best of luck

It sure doesn't hurt to flush out the pump and hoses with a quart or two of PS fluid. Mine had a lot of dirt and grit in it.
