Default Car was just blasted - should I replace these body panels?

My paint shop just called me. The car was just blasted and all the paint is off. Here's what they found under the paint: a poor repair in a rear quarterpanel, cracked hood surround, aftermarket hood.

Of course they are suggesting replacing the hood and quarterpanel. They say they can do a god job repairing the surround. What do you guys think? Should I replace those areas? Would people really be able to notice those problem areas once the car is painted?

What I'm thinking to have them do is repair the surround and replace the quarterpanel, but keep the aftermarket hood. (It looked like a regular SB hood to me before the paint came off, so why change it?)

This paint job is costing me a pretty penny, so I want to make sure it comes our right.

Any thoughts?

DaddyO,
If it's in the wheel well area I would replace it.
After I stripped my paint I discovered that the left rear quarter panel was damaged in the wheel well area and I elected to replace it. ALTHOUGH IT CAN BE DONE, it's hard to get that crisp factory wheel well lip by fiberglass repair.
I was lucky enough to find a NOS panel for mine.

Well if the hood is okay and you are comfortable with it. Just have them fix everythingelse around it. However if it were me I would use it as a chance to throw on a L-88 hood :reddevil :yesnod: ...

Personally, I like the lines of the SB hood......but the real question is what's the big deal if it's an 'aftermarket' SB hood.

I would just ask them why they feel the hood should be replaced....maybe it's a poor quality repo but I would want them to explain and show you the problem areas....after all it's your money.

Um - that sound a bit shady to me - but they may have valid issues regarding the hood.
Let's say they replace it. With what ? You can't buy a NOS hood. You have to
purchase aftermarket - or used. I would go aftermarket - but where does
that get you ? ... right back where we started.

Can you spell M-A-R-K-U-P ? My guess is they want to make some $$ off the
hood sale, but you need to ask them : WHY ??

Good luck.

Here's my $.02. My car is black so every imperfection is magnified. I had to make a repair on the nose just right of the driver side headlamp door. I've done that repair at least 3 times with fiberglass and resin and it still eventually shows through. I had the same problem when I tried to fill the luggage rack holes. After a few months the telltale line of the holes would show. This might not be too bad with other colors but black is unforgiving. I think if you have a choice of repairing something that will eventually cause problems later or replacing it now the economical thing to do would be replace it. Again, JMHO.

Your body shop is probably pretty legitimate on their recommendations. Sometimes the cost of labor in making a repair would come close to the cost of labor and parts to replace panels, and then you would have something a little more sound and solid. Just my opinion, but one has to look at how much total extra cost is involved over what you initially thought?
