Polished rims, came out nice!
Stingray66 thanks for the buffer. Just got the Vette back from the painter so wanted to try out the new buffer. Didn't want to try risking it on a rim so tried it on the spacer plate first. Look at the reflection of the caliper on the spacer.
With a nice rub-out with mothers paste that should come out like glass. Noted it is hard to get the buffing wheel around that caliper.
The buffing wheel is too large to get the inside edges of the rim and the small cotton pad just blew apart leaving me with a face full of grit. Need to get a small sturdy wheel for the inside edges but still came out nice.

Anyone out there know where I can purchase a 2/1/2-3" buff pad, not a cotton fluffy one but the hardened one as shown at the bottom of the first picture.

Re: Polished rims, came out nice! (groovyjay)
Jay will do I just got 3 more rims to do. The spacer plate took 45min. The rim 30 min. and it was 9PM when my girl showed up so hopefully Friday I can hit them all. Due to the fact the center cap is chromed plastic and the lug nuts are in the way of the buffer I think removing the rim is the only safe way to go. Additionally I don't want to take any chances on that buffer losing control and heading toward a fender.

Check out Eastwood for any buffer parts you need. They have a web page.

I'd check out a Sears hardware also for the pads. I still polish by hand :( . Your results are very nice  .

Re: Polished rims, came out nice! (Madmikeee)
I tried this;
1. start with hi-grit rouge and buff out scratches. Wipe off residue.
2. clean off wheel and apply mid-grit (green) rouge work circular back and forth pattern.
3. rub off residue then follow up with hand buff with Mothers paste.
I swear it looks like chrome. Bad part is it took 10 minutes for the 1 spoke and I have 3 rims to go.

Hey Dave.. Looks like your getting the hang of the thingie..as I had mentioned, it takes time and more practice to find a useable meathod..but remember, as you aquire the right buff pads and compounds, the job will take much less time to do..first time will be time consuming...
I will be at the Pomona swap on Sunday, They have everything you could possibly need there..I hope to see ya there.. call me if you go, and Ill meet ya somewhere..
that one buff I sent with the unit was Iffy at best,,, I was affraid it wouldnt take the rpm's and I guess it didnt.. sorry buddy..
Also, taking the rims off the car is much easier and safer when you go to do a good job on them,, at least until your comfortable with the buffer..... :steering:

Re: Polished rims, came out nice! (Stinger66)
The pad made it thrrough 2 rims until I hit the lug nut hole just right and it exploed into my face, luckily I had my gogles on but the car was covered by 1" of debris from doing all 4 rims at the end of the day. I think there is no way to do a good job without removing the rims.
1. The center cap is chrome plated plastic :U and the buffer would destroy them, the cap only comes off from prying from behind with the rims off, otherwise a screwdriver would gouge it.
2. The lug nuts edges destroyed the wheel and I could not buff around the lug nuts so again the wheel had to come off.
3. It is always a good time to pull the rim and clean off my new a-arms and apply some tire magic to the arms, red poly bushings, polish the lubricating fitting plate and keep everything all pretty back under there.
FAUXRS I CAN DO POMONA SUNDAY, BUT I'M TAKING THE HONDA. I CAN'T RISK A STONE HIT ON A THREE DAY OLD PAINT JOB. ONCE THE PAINT IS A LITTLE OLDER I'LL RISK IT BUT RIGHT NOW I'M STILL ENJOYING IT. A MATTER OF FACT I'M GOING TO GRAB A FRESH XX AND GO LOOK AT HER AGAIN. :D
