AFR heads - 190 or 195 and angle or straight plug with headers
I was going to get the 190 straight plug but they are backordered.
They have the 195s on the shelf.
They said with an RPM Air Gap intake (which I have not installed yet but it's in the garage) that the 195s were better.
They also said to use angle plugs with headers.
What are you guys running?
FYI, I have a Comp 268H cam (.454 lift 218/218 duration) with Pro Magnum 1.6 Roller Rockers, 10.5:1 compression with new heads. 1-3/4" Super Comp headers.
Thanks in advance!
Jeff

Re: AFR heads - 190 or 195 and angle or straight plug with headers (no_radio)
Just curious, who said they are back ordered? I have a running gripe with the folks I ordered my heads from (not AFR) and would recommend you avoid them like the plague! They are located in Tuscon and advertise in all the mags at a lower price than AFR direct. Beware.
As for which heads to use, good luck getting a consensus but I think most folks will tell you the 195's are a good fit for the RPM manifold you have. However, John Lingenfelter wrote in his book that he felt even 190 was a little large for good throttle response for a 350.
I myself went with the 190 cc straight plug, but am still waiting on them. I choose straight plug because thats what fits my headers now so I have a little confidence the afr's will fit too. I chose 190s for my 383 because I am running a smaller port manifold to fit under my stock hood and I was swayed by Lingenfelter's book. I chose the 74 cc chamber cause that will set my compression just right on the custom machined KB pistons.
Thats a pretty short duration cam to use in a 10.5:1 compression engine. It will give you a pretty high dynamic compression ratio. Might want to look at something with a little longer duration.

Re: AFR heads - 190 or 195 and angle or straight plug with headers (71roadster)
I ran the straight plug 195's because I couldn't get a straight answer on which heads would work with headers. Most of the time at Carlisle I see stock straight plug heads on cars with side pipes or headers. Could be the guy didn't upgrade the heads yet, could be the headers won't fit angle plug heads. Don't know for sure,so I ordered straight plug 195's. BTW the ports on the RPM intake are way small for the 195's,so I hand port matched mine. The Comp 268H cam is way too small to run with heads that cost this much. I would step up to at least the XE-274 if I were you.

Stick with the 190's :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: , I'm not sure what your headers look like so I can't suggest a plug angle. When I called AFR, they told me for my 383 that I was planning on building to stick with the 190, the 195's are better for 400ci+ and higher rpm motors. In AFR catalog, they have a 500+ horsepower and torque 383 with the 190's on it  . For a 350 the 190's will more than do the job :yesnod: . If I were you I'd step up to a Comp Cams 268XE or 274XE with either heads. Good Luck

Yeah, the cam is probably coming out in the next year or so, when I step up to electric fans. I just don't want to screw with the rad/fan shroud again, that really sucked last time.
Also, my stock heads (GM 882) work with straight plugs and headers, but AFR is the one that told me angle plug...I am corn-fused!
Herberts mail order speed parts told me the 190s were back ordered. Everytime I call AFR they tell me 4 weeks, that the castings are on the shelf but need to be machined and assembled. The first guy I ordered the heads through I don't know that well, and thought maybe I was getting jerked around by his responses...now I don't know what to think. Hope to get more input on this Forum.
Thanks,
Jeff

I have a friend that has the angle plug heads with hooker headers on his 69 camaro and he has no problems.
