Default My New/New Mufflers-Intriguing Design

(I hope the Moderators will allow this. I have been fascinated by innovative engineering design.)

My new, unused #40352 Borlas found a happy home in the Southern USA recently so this is my latest experiment. I was looking for minimal noise over stock with efficient flow-through. The concern with the Borlas was the straight-through pipe design and possible excess noise. My on-line searches led me to a firm in CA called SpinTech. I read their muffler patent at the US Patent Office and was fascinated by the simplicity of the design and uniqueness. So I ordered a pair and they arrived today.

They are of aluminized construction but very thick gauge steel. And they are heavy. Dimensions are 16 x 9 1/4 x 4". Very sturdy and well put together. Not pretty like the Borlas however. Here is the flow/noise reduction concept pic. Note the cylindrical chambers inside the unit that dissipate noise but permit free flow. An interesting design with no fibreglass or other packing to deteriorate with time.

As noted they are not pretty. The XL series (3334XL) I ordered have a fourth row of those cylinders beyond what you see in pic#1. This is to keep noise at a level fairly calm.

This is the US patent number. If you go to the US Patent Office site and plug in that number you can read the filing (1998).

This give you an idea of the metal thickness.

And the next two pics show those internal cylinders from the inlet and outlet ends.

I do not advocate or endorse this product. Make your own judgements. I will not know how they perform until installed in April; after the winter storage season.

I know quit a few guys who use SpinTech in their Dakota 5.9 R/T's, but they usually get the louder versions. Never heard a complaint and over 50 guys on the forum must have them.
Another great no name company that I have on my R/T is "MBRP"
Im sure with some intuition you could find some info on it. If you want a video clip with the sound of the MBRP, just IM me

Interesting....
Any comparisons on the web vs flowmasters, hooker aeros, etc?

That is one ugly muffler, sure hope it performs better than it looks.
Hey I'll be ordering from Dr Rebuild tomorrow, did you get someone to order those clips you needed? If not let me know.

Jerry,
They will be tucked up underneath and out of sight ;) . And my entire exhaust system is black in any case. One of those mufflers has already been painted with VHT 1500F high-heat paint. Yes, someone did volunteer to get those clips for me. But thanks for asking!

Hey no problem but your going to lose a lot of NCRS points with those mufflers(that is if you still care). BTW what do you think of that VHT paint and where did you get it. I need some chevy engine orange for touch up.

I thoroughly admire and respect what NCRS stands for. And I joined because they are an important part of the world of Corvettes; a part that I wish to be associated with and enjoy. But I have no illusions that my 1979 will meet the standards. But that does not preclude me from participating in their work.

I obtained the VHT paint from a local speed shop. I would imagine it is widely available.

that stuff is junk, you need to apply it to a rough surface (sand blasted) and make sure there's no moisture in it so the part is best treated when heated. If you spray it on it'll leave a finsh that is easily scratched off and very open in structure. If moisure gets trapped in there and you bake it (the stuff must be cured) the moisture will evaporate out and you will get uggly bublles in it. I learned it the hard way, it didn't say anything about it on the cover. IMO, it was overpriced junk, the finish isn't all that great and it's not resistant to 1500F at all, I bet it won't even stand up to 1000F. It bleaches very rapidly.

what color does it need to be and are you planning on using it on the mufflers or the exhaust? If it hsa to stand up to heat and be pretty I'd think about the cerma chrome by techline coatings. If it's for the mufflers to cover the (sorry) butt ugly welds on there..some black engine paint should hold up pretty well.

Paul don't get me wrong, far be it for me to tell someone what they should or shouldn't do with their car, and you certainly don't have to have a TF car to participate in the NCRS but based on the pics you've shown of your car I think you would be surprised on how well it would do. Anyway thanks for the info on the paint, I found a site and ordered a can.

I guess I was humbled last evening when in contact with a NCRS member. He was looking for a gas cap for a 1978. Not the current service part which is readily available from GM in plastic but the original gold metal cap. He sent me a pic of his 1978 with 1,600 miles on it. I can't compete with that: my 1979 is pretty but driven. And there is wear and tear. And many of my replacement fasteners are SS with anti-seize compound. I cannot go back to original fasteners. And I do not say that facetiously: I do not have to time to find the correct fasteners. I admire his car very much but in Canada's short driving season, I want to drive. But this does not diminish my interest in NCRS. Only perhaps just for my car.

Marck,
I prepped with lacquer thinner, painted and did the initial cook at 200F for 30 minutes. All went well...OK the Wife caught me this time ;) . But that VHT paint looks just fine. No bubbling and the like. So I do not know what to say....

It seems like a fine product from the hype.

Ahh you did all the work indoors and not a moist shed or garage, that'll help prevent the bubbling.

Now all you have to do is cross your fingers and hope it stays on.

It certainly doesn't stay on headers for longer than 10 minutes but you may be safe on mufflers (don't get too hot)

B.T.W. The mufflers looks a lot better this way :)

What's that on the right? beer?? :)

Honestly the best thing for headders I have found is regular old BBQ Black
from Rustoleum... The paint held up on my Demon's Slip Tube headders for
a couple years.. Yes it bleaches and yes it will rub off in time. But short of
Techline (Good stuff!) or JetHot, it's your only bet for decently long term..
