What if GM decided to install six cylinders in Corvettes?
If GM reverted to using six cylinders engines in the new Corvettes would you still be interested in the models? I wonder with the CAFE regulations up and coming if at some point the V8 is simply finished and would that lead to the demise of the Corvette itself? Considering the actions of so many states at curbing emmisions and fuel economy if we've seen the last few V8 to be build? :bb

i guess that would make ours more valueable....
i don't think i would ever be interested in buying a new one, unless i won a lottery , so for me i don't really care....

Won't happen....The American public would never give up there love for powerful cars. Automakers will find ways to clean up the combustion process until regulations are met. As long as internal combustion is being used there will be V8s.

I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.
GM has become very adept at improving the V8 to keep current and the C5 is an excellent example. Who would've thought way back when that you could have a Vette pumping out a smooth 350hp, getting 18-19mpg around town and 30mpg at 90mph all day long on the interstate, extremely low emissions, kick the azz outta 98% of the other cars you come across, have state-of-the-art computer management systems that are very user friendly and adjustable AND still be able to cruise like an old ladies caddy if you want to. These motors can easily be hopped up to 500-600hp and purr like a kitten in traffic.
Regardless of your personal likes or dislikes regarding the C5, GM has done a heck of a job keeping the Vette in the line-up as a world class machine and the LS1/LS6 is a big reason for that. I expect the C6 will deliver even more so NO, I don't think the Chevy V8 has much to worry about for a while to come. ;) Oh yeah...I would NOT buy a V6 Corvette and neither would many other people and that could lead to it's demise, besides...a V6 in a Corvette simply ain't American :flag :flag

Never happen. CAFE means Corporate Average Fuel Economy. What this means is the number of MPG is the average of all the passenger cars produced by the manufacturer. GM would certainly work on getting a Caviler or Monte Carlo's fuel mileage higher to meet CAFE than to put a V6 in a Corvette (I hope ). The only way I would buy a 6 cylinder Corvette if it were a Buick V6 like in the Grand National or a straight 6 in a 53 or 54.

I wouldn't mind a V6 bi-turbo with 600 HP... :D :D

I don't think CAFE will be an issue for Vettes. On a club outing from Chicago to Bowling Green our C5 members were getting 34-35 MPG. My '78 was getting 18 MPG, and one of our 75s running a 410 gear was getting about 8 mpg. I actually read of a salesman who even sells Vette as an economical performance car, though most folks just laugh (the insurance makes up for the gas mileage). I would guess the sport utes will be first to be attacked because moe folks buying them is what hurt cafe. i don't see the Ford Expedition as getting stellar mileage! :flag

On another note I have been reading more and more about a C6 "SuperVette". This will be tiered above the standard Vette at about 75,000. It is slated to be a Viper fighter. Rumor has it that iit's a 427 BIG BLOCK!!!! Substantiated this is the fact that two GM high ups arrived at one of the big events driving this unique looking Vette with a 427. I just wish it sold for around 40,000. :chevy

Cadillac is toying with resurrection of the V-16.
I plan on being dead before the V-8's demise, and I'm only 42.

The 3.8L turbo intercooled V6 Buick has serious potential. My bro has a 87 T-type Regal that is streetable to the max and is knocking on 10's door in the 1/4. Last time out he broke his tq convertor and had very poor 60' times in the 2.5 second range. He still went 11.40's. Normally his best 60' times are in the 1.7 range. Do the math, its a 10 second car and gets 24 mpg. He usually gets booted for not having a roll bar. He does have a lot of $ in it.

The Buick V6 is a great engine that has been used even in Indy cars; but, I really prefer the instant throttle response of normally aspirated cars. Turbo cars are second fiddle. I have driven well tuned 911 cars without turbo and liked them much better than the turbo version.
There are a lot of nice turbo cars out there, but that is simply my personal preference.

My wife has the supercharged version of the 3800 and it has an instant 7 pounds of boost, no turbo lag there and still gets over 30 mpg at 80 or 90 mph.
It has no trouble lighting up the 235 x 17 tires.

If the Viper can have a 10 and pass emissions then we are no ware close to loosing our 8
The only thing I did not like about the Sting ray III was the 6 :nono:

Well I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just wondering. You never can tell what General Motors is thinking, and the bean counters always seen to have the upper hand at times. :seeya

Hmmm....well, considering my car and many other mid-seventies Corvettes made less than 200HP, and the new V6s (naturally aspirated) are well over 200HP (foreign V6s approaching 300HP) I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world.
BUT, I love V8s, and I don't think GM would make a mistake that big. That's just flushing your heritage down the toilet.

If we can go to war over a dictater in a country clear acrossed the ocean who is clearly not a direct threat to us,I suppose I could march down to Detroit with a six foot digging iron and beat some sense into the engineer that thinks a six banger is what the AMERICAN PUBLIC WOULD WANT IN A CORVETTE.
