New CA smog law!
Dean Florez is proposing some new smog legislation here in ca. They are rolling back the 1973 smog exemptions to cars which are 45 years or older only. So now I have to buy a 1959 or older vette. What about all of you guys that bought a 1973-1959 and removed all of the emmission equipment, what will you do when you get the TEST ONLY smog test in your registration?

Here's a little info:
His proposal: http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/bill/sen/...ntroduced.html
His homepage and contact info : http://democrats.sen.ca.gov/senator/florez/
Thanks for sharing this tidbit.
Without it I never would have known this was going on.

This does not make me happy!!! :mad I have a stang that would not like it if I had to put smog stuff on her.
And...I'v been counting the days untill 2006 when my vette will be smog exempt. If this bill passes then I will have to wait untill 2021!!!!! That is rediculous. :mad :mad :mad

Politicians. Sheesh. How are they going to smog-check a car that had no smog limits set at the date of manufacture?
Anybody contact SEMA yet?

And to think I was going to purchase a 1973! I guess we are never safe. Every year they can repeal this new law and we will have to take our cars back to factory specs.

I believe in sensible environmental laws. When the cost of a policy to prevent pollution outweighs the benefits, the policy becomes stupid. There are very few cars on the road that are older than 25 years. The effects of such a new law will have no benefit to the environment, but the cost to society will be enormous. The same can be said of tail pipe testing in general. Most cars are clean because they are less than 25 years old. I have heard that less than 1% of all cars fail the tail pipe test, yet the state collects $35-40 from EVERYBODY for such test. It's ridiculous.

Here's my letter to my senate rep. Hopefully it's good. I've never had to write any of my reps before.
Hello Mr. Dunn,
I would like to take a moment to discuss a bill I heard of recently introduced by (D)Dean Florez of Fresno. His proposed bill (SB 708) calls for the reversal of our current rolling emissions exemption on motor vehicles 30 model years old.
While I believe that pollution is a problem that we need addressed in this state I don't believe that Florez's proposed bill would do much, if anything to impact that. For the most part you don't see a great deal of vehicles on our highways 30 years old or older so it stands to reason that they are not the culprit of any great deal of pollution in our state. Most registered vehicles beyond that 30 year time frame belong to hobbyists like myself who've spent years and countless dollars building them to their former glory and are then used occasionally for recreational purposes so they are not even in use as much as regular registered vehicles. I believe that this bill, if passed would impact a great deal of my fellow hobbyists negatively while doing extremely little, if anything at all to take care of what it is designed to. I hope that when you review this bill you will see things the same way as my fellow hobbyists and I and vote against it.
Thank You,
Roger Lewis

Looks like for us to enjoy our cars and like in the Kalifornia Socialist republik, you will have to pull your motor and temporarily replace it with the smog legal one. Then, after you pass the inspection, you take another Saturday and put the other motor back in. Simple.
They can pass ANY laws they want, but there's always a way around it.
Don't worry, this bill will probably be struck down as did the triple registration increase did in Ca.
Bob

Re: New CA smog law! (Bob Turner)
I had previously assumed the basis was on 1973 or newer vechicles as of 1998 (25 years old) Then I found out 1973 was the limit illregardless of the year date i.e. in even 2002vat 25 years old my 77 is still an emission vechicle. My only option was to transfer power of vessel authority to my Dad in Michigan. My vechicle has MI plates since 2002 and emissions are no longer an issue. Blower you name it I can do it regardless of emissions however what happens when I retire and must go back to emission tests  Nothing is left, I mean not one emission part remains.
3 options
1. Stay in a few more years.
2. Move to MI, FLA or any states without emissions for 20+ year old vechicles.
3. Sell the Vette.

Are you sure it's just not a trick way to increase revenue. The way the law is now you can just pay the state for your first smog check on a new car and not get the check. If thats not just a way to get money than I don't know what is.

It would have been overturned the year after it was imposed were it not for SEMA, and legislation to overturn it appears EVERY YEAR...yes folks thats EVERY YEAR since its inception. Get used to it, sooner or later the dorks in Sacremento will win over common sense and we'll be smogging Model 'T's
BTW Dede Alpert got my mail - but she's a Democrat like Flores so I'm hoping that the people with the money (SEMA and big business) belly up to the bar on this one, because the auto enthusiast is the small fry on this one, and only those who can line these imbeciles pockets can change anything.

Re: New CA smog law! (chewy)
Your right chewy, its the way to increase the Dean Florez slush fund. Politicians need alot of greese - green type, not for use on axles.
I don't hear proposals to stick a catalytic converter on NASCAR, Winston Cup or Indy or Cart racers when they come to town. Too much big influence and big money to local economy. But How much SMOG do they make?? My guess its close to or more than what our 30 year olds produce. Deans answer to SMOG is to criminalize hobbies of the law abiding public - much easier target.
Now a better solution would be selling natural gas buring cars inside California. An existing clean fuel that Mr. Florez produces plenty of himself. :flag
