Stock or Modified ?
I just purchaced my first Vette. It is a '68, and a real project. How can I find out what kind of motor it origonaly had ? and is it more valuable to be restored to stock or will it be worth just the same if I modify it. Such as a different paint color than the factory yellow. or a custom stereo v/s the origional equipment. :steering:

Welcome to the forum. :seeya
Your VIN # alone will not tell you what engine. What are the casting #'s on the block and heads, if original. What is the redline on the tach? Do you have a rear sway bar?
Give us a little more info and we will be glad to help.
Great choice on that '68.

The tach taps out at 7000 RPM and I don't see anything that resembles a rear sway bar. The car currently has a 350 which is obviously not origional. A 4 speed mannual, It never had A/C It has no power brakes, no power steering or power anything else.

modification usually equals less money except in extreme situations. however, since the motor isn't original quality mods may make the car more valuable. by the way welcome.

Thanks, for the warm welcome guys. I'm new to Corvettes and Computers, so bare with me.
Well, it must have been a small block, b/c it starts to red line at 5500.

Re: Stock or Modified ? (B)
Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to go with metalic silver paint, trash the luggage rack, drop in a bad butt 383 stroker, and a boomin' system.
I just finished a restoration of a 1972 340 'Cuda. i didn't restore it back to the exact factory specs, and now all the buyers are complaining. I had one guy who wanted to buy it until he found out it wasnt an origional plum crazy car. Who cares ? it is now, but that made all the difference in the world to him. I had to replace the trunk pan, and instead of welding in a reproduction pan, I shaped my own sheet metal and welded it in. I shaped it to fit a speaker box instead of a spare tire. That has detoured alot of buyers for some reason. I don't understand why. It's the trunk, and it's covered with carpet. Well, hopefully the Vette crowd is not so particular, or I'll be stuck with a Vette and a 'Cuda. which aint so bad, but it means I'm going to have to build another garage.
Oh well,
C-ya

First... It is your car so whatever you want to do... IF it is (was) a rare optioned car AND you had the original parts, then the value might be higher in stock form. Otherwise the value is whatever someone will pay.. Mild custom modified cars are becomming quite popular. The wilder they get the more limited the buyer market will be. If say for instance you painted it a new modern color with some graphics the appeal will be with the younger crowd. Young people like corvettes and that would be an attraction.
A restored stock small block low optioned car my actually be worth less than a tastefully modified car. with a killer sound system, 17" whells and tires.

Actually vette owners are the most polarized car buffs there are. On one hand you have the NCRS original air in the tires crowd, and on the other hand you have the blown bigblock 9-second crowd. Plus everyone in between. But, if it comes time to sell the vette, an original one will sell faster. Joe

Welcome Clay. I subscribe to the motto that if it feels good do it. It's your car and it's there for your pleasure. I don't think anyone on this forum ever expects to get back the money they put into their machines. God knows I never will. It's the fun of doing it. It's the journey. Go to my website in my sig for some tips. My sig pic says it all for me.
