Default Painting and Door Jambs

I am now sanding my first coat of K36 primer that was laid on a coat of DP48 sealer. My doors are still on my '75 but I would like to paint the door jambs. Is there any way to get a quality paint job on the jambs while leaving the doors intact?

I do not want to remove the doors, if possible, because I worry that getting the doors to align after removal will be difficult.

What does your experiences suggest?

Thank you.

Stephen

There is an interesting article in the current NCRS restorer newsletter about how to insure that doors are reinstalled in the exact position from which they came. Basically it entails drilling 2 or 3 holes through each hinge and mounting plate. These holes should be the diamter of a small nail or pin - so that they can be inserted into the holes for allignment when reassembling.

I have'nt yet triied it - but it seems like a reasonable approach.

With all the time and money you're putting into the repaint, take the doors off or you probably won't be happy down the road. Installing and alligning the doors is a pain, but there are several techniques that will work. By in large, most of the techniques require lot's of patience and trial and error.

This is also the time to rework any door edges to get the gap just right.

Remove the doors........it's the only way to get complete coverage. When I did mine, I spray painted the lower door hinge inside the door to mark it's location. Then removed the hinge pin in the upper hinge and unbolted the lower inside the door. Just tape all the edges after paint when you reassemble the doors.
