I'm trying to figure out which one I have. All help greatly appreciated.

And no...I don't mean is it an automatic or standard.

If you have a clutch it's a manual, usually a 4spd, and if it does not have a clutch it is an automatic transmisssion! MJ (Give us a little more info!)

Sorry...she's an Auto...as most 80's were. I wish it was a manual, but thats another project down the line.

TH 350 has a square pan with one cut off corner. TH 400 has a strange curved/ very odd shaped pan. Look in one of the vendors catalogues

TH350. They stopped putting 400's in Vettes a few years previously. And in '81 they used the TH350C ("c" is for computer).

Re: Whats the easiest way to identify your transmission type? (MNJack)
Yes, and surprisingly (to me) 4spd was not available with the L-82 engine in 1980. So, what was the automatic trans in 1980? I dunno... should be an easy one :) MJ
Thanks Guys! Looks like TH350 is the winner. Great Pics Tom. That made it real easy to tell which one it was.
MJ - Yea.....a 4spd for my L82 would have been real nice. Someday I will attempt the change.

If stock it is a TH350C.
TH350C has a lockup converter. On the firewall (driver's side), you should have a vacuum line running into an electric switch with wires running down into the driver's side of the transmission.
The vacuum line is connected to a Thermal Vacuum Switch (TVS)at the front of the engine. The TVS keeps the torque converter from locking up when the engine is cold.

The 80 I have came with the TH350C and had the electric lockup converter. It now has the standard TH350.The pan pix will give you the general info, look for the wire hookup to determine if you have a lockup converter or not.

Externally, the 4-speeds look identical. MNJack has posted some info in the past about how to determine M20 -vs- M21 by the RPM drop when shifting from 3rd to 4th. Hopefully he'll respond.

Anyone have pictures for the 4-speed trannys in a 69?

If the 69 is the same as the 70-72, you can tell by the code number stamped verically on the passenger's side of the case just ahead of the extension. As an example my 70 has a P0B04A.
P is Muncie HD 4-speed
0 is 1970 model year
B is month of February
04 is the day of the month
A is M-20
B would be M-21
C would be M-22
Hope this helps.

Do you know where the location is to find codes for a '78 L-82 ST-10? I'm trying to find out what ratio I have (close or wide) and what is first gear.
