Default How do you stop the headlights from going down?

Is there a way of getting the headlights to stay up with the ignition switched off, so that the lights are off when I change a bulb? Can they be manually opened/closed?

Phil, With your car running and the headlights on, pull down on the switch, located under the dash at the bottom of the stearing column and then turn your headlights off. They should remain in the up position.LT

Yep, you should have an auxiliary switch on the bottom of the dash, directly below the steeering column. Pull it straight down.

Besides the switch I have no trouble reaching up under the front of the car, grabbing the mechanisim and opening or close a light manually. There is a knee action arm with a spring on either side. Grab this joint and move it one way or the other and the light will move.

i agree with the switch under the dash but on my 78 if i want the lights to stay up i just turn the car off before i turn my lights off and they will stay up.

Just what I was gonna say. Leave lights on and turn car off. Just remember to turn the lights off after the car is off! Shouldn't be hard to remember if you're changing a bulb though!

Thanks NEO / LT / BB - I always wondered what that switch was for.

HCDave / BlankMan - I tried that, but if I do that the bulbs remain on.

Cheers

Just be careful doing it this way because if your vacuum system is tight (little or no leaks) you headlights may close if you turn the switch off on the dash. Originally, the vacuum system was suppose to be able to hold enough vacuum so that you can open and close your light a couple of time without starting the engine. Just FYI.
