Kool Blue filters.. anyone used them yet?
Accel makes "Kool Blue" filters that are an alternative to K&N filters. They're simply washed clean instead of cleaned and oiled like K&N's are. They're a tad cheaper, even.
Has anyone tried them out yet? I'm looking for new filters for my '82, and really don't like having to buy special oil each time for the K&N's.

When I looked them up on Summit, they were $28.95 a piece (for my '82, which I need two of them) and K&N's were $32.95 a piece. It's not so much the price difference but the fact that you don't have to *oil* the damn things each time you clean them. Just wash them and put them back in.

I just saw that but I just cleaned and oiled the K&N and it's still putting out, once it's junk, out to the garbage and in with the blue. What sucks is once you wash the K&N and re-oil it you HAVE to blow it out with compressed air becuase the oil goes on too thick and gets all over the engine bay (smeared chrome) at hi RPM. Now I take it to work and use the compressor, No more red smeared oil all over my valve covers.

Sometime ago, "The Money Pit" suggested using toy clay to determine if you can use a taller filter. Since my only kid is almost 19 all of the toy clay is gone. I did set a box of wooden matches on top of the highest point and dropped the hood. When I raised it the box was still there at the same angle. The box is 1/2 inch tall, so I can move up a little.
I then found a Kool Blue that is 14" X 3.5" and will be ordering it tonight. This place keeps costing me money. :skep:

I sold my old K&N's to a friend.. they were worth the money when I bought them but I like the concept of the Kool Blues is a lot better. I was originally going to get taller K&N's but then I found these..

What Twin Turbo said but I'll add suggestion: after oiling set the filter on it's side on a paper towel for an hour or so that way any excess oil run off on to the paper towel.
