L 88 hood with air box
I am thinking of getting a L 88 hood for my car and I was wondering if I could make it work with the air box just like zwede did with a K&N filter in the hood that mates up with the lower air cleaner assy.
Please correct me if I am wrong
But this is what I think I need
1 Long style L88 hood for my 76 With an air box if it comes that way.
2 the lower air cleaner assy
Is it as simple as this or am I missing somthing
please advise.
thanks.

I will be test fitting my original L-88 hood as soon as I get some good weather up here. Yes you would need the long hood for your 76, since I have a 72 mine is a short hood. I had hoped to do it this weekend but we got snowed in again, and the heavy stuff is just coming down now, highways in and out of the town have been closed. I just got back from a giggle drive in the Explorer - needed milk etc and couldn't help myself from pulling 4 wheel donuts.

Aaron,
The bottom of the airbox is sealed to the air cleaner base via a foam ring that goes between them. Than you have to either buy the smaller L88 filter that bolts to the carb stud or.....fabricate a rod (w/ a hole in the midpoint that the carb stud slips through) which curves down on each end to meet the air cleaner base- sort of like an upside down "U". You need to do either one of these things in order to secure the air cleaner base to the carb itself. I hope this makes sense- everytime I try to explain this I wonder....
If you're interested in saving the $$$ that the L88 small filter would run you, let me know & I'll post a pic of the rod that a friend fabbed for me.

Aaron, if you get Dream Car Garage on Speed Channel, watch it today as they showed how the carb, air filter fit into the L-88 cowl with the foam sheilding. Les I would be interested in seeing your setup as well.

How did you guys get a K&N to fit up there? Did you use a regular 3" element or did you use something taller? I have a 3" and it just kind of flops around up in there. I like the idea of using something like a K&N up there rather than a Foam element.

Re: L 88 hood with air box (Steve Straus)
Steve,
I used the K&N element that's made to replace the stock one, so we should be talking about the same thing here. On the top & bottom surfaces of the element I attached weatherstripping made w/ adhesive on one side. Then I trimmed it, using a razor blade, to obtain the right fit in the airbox.

The air cleaner assembly consists of 6 pieces. The base, lid, wire screen, spark arrestor, wing nut and foam seal. The air filter consists on another wire screen and a foam type filter.

Sorry, I didn't include my usual disclaimer. :D These are some old pics.
Hopefully 454 will be transfered in a couple months. I'm being optimistic! :D
I think Zwede trimmed down a 4 in filter for the chamber. If I remember correctly, the opening is 3.75in.

I am looking into fabricating the hood as well with a L-88 scoop and a 76 Hood. That should save me some bucks as well

I used a 14x3 K&N filter. I cut the L88 foam seal and placed it between the K&N and the hood. It holds it in real secure. Hasn't moved in over 2 years.

Re: L 88 hood with air box (Aaron76)
Hi Aaron, I have 77 and purchased an L88 hood and air box from Ecklers. The airbox requires a lot of fabricating to get it to fit and work properly. The airbox is a direct fit for a 69 style hood but the L88 long hood is a bit differant underneath especially back near the cowl area. You'll also need the special carb base and sealing ring and air filter. I think the carb bases are getting hard to find. Check with Corvette America, they sell the complete setup. The Ecklers hood was very nice and well made. Good luck if you decide to go with it. Bob

did the L88 air filter base fit onto your carb no problem or did you have to make an adapter plate because the base was for a Big block
thanks

Re: L 88 hood with air box (Aaron76)
The base will fit almost any 4 barrel carb. You will probably need a carb to air cleaner spacer, you can get these in assorted heights from edelbrock. Plus you may need an intake to carb spacer to get the required height for the sealing ring to meet the air box and seal properly. Hope this helps. Bob

By all means a 4 holer, more low end torque & throttle responce. Consider a phenolic (plastic like) 4 hole spacer for good insulating properties. Bob
