82 - Belts/Pulleys are acting up
Here's the deal... We did some engine mods (cam/headers/ported intake/ported heads/rockers/other misc stuff) and ever since it's been back together the AC belt vibrates the compressor back and forth. If I remove it, it's fine obviously. It's going to be getting hot soon and we can't figure out what's going on. It didn't have this problem until we pulled everything off and put it back on. Thinking the balancer might not have been on 100%, I went and bought a balancer installer. We made sure the balancer was on completely, and it's still doing it. I can't for the life of me think what might be wrong here. The only thing that's different is we didn't put the air pump back on, so that belt is not there anymore. If anyone has a clue, please let me know so we can fix it! It looks like the AC compressor is just a tad too far forward, but it's not adjustable! If anyone has any ideas, please clue me in before I take it to a shop.
Thanks!
Jeremy

Are you sure you routed the belts correctly? If it is just the AC belt bouncing, then I would say the tension is wrong, mine did it bad until I tightened it up.
If it is moving the whole compressor, you might want to check the compressor itself, it almost sounds like it might be trying to freeze up on you.
Keep me posted, I am curios as to what you find.

I don't thing its the lack of a smog pump because I have been running mine without it for about a year now. No problem.

You guys installed headers but the front exhayst bolt is used by the a/c compressor bracket. Did you put the spacer back in and did you adjust for the difference in thickness between the new and old header flanges?

Twin- Can welded the spacer back onto the headers. So, It's sturdy. Just when the motor is running the a/c compressor moves back and forth about 1/4 inch front and back. All the belts good and tight.
Jeremy- I think we need to put a few washers in between the alternator bracket and head. That's what i did to mine to keep it from rubbing the p/s pump. We'll have to give that a try. As for the A/C, remember how it looked a little too far forward, maybe we can pull in back and then mack another bracket and bolt it to the front of the head to reinforce it...i dunno. just some idea's...

71,
We're still trying to pinpoint it. I think it's just BARELY misaligned, and it's causing the compressor to vibrate. Nothing major, but it's a little bit annoying at idle so I took off the AC belt until we can get it back like it was.

Jeremy, take a look at this pic; there's a brace (bar) that goes from the bottom of the block up to the A/C compressor bracket - check on yours and make sure you have it installed.
If you don't, that could be your problem.
